When you have to drop a workout....
Fight that urge.
I don't do any speed work during the base phase. I wait until after the winter training then add a speed or intensity training session per discipline each week. And as I get closer to a specific race I'll do more sprint/track work until about a week prior. Many philosophies differ on training, but that's the approach I take, stemming from some of the Mark Allen stuff I've read and having a couple brothers in the pro circuit.
So, that being said - I'd definitely do the long workout. Though it can be boring and tedious and the urge to go fast is ever present, sticking to a base plan will reap you benefits in the long run (pun intended :)), even if you are concentrating on shorter disctance.
Thanks Tribro,
Just feeling a bit of the winter blues I guess... :(
Got your reply before this afternoon's run and took it slow....
Amazing the difference when you hear it from someone else.
Glad I got the run in... supposed to get 12-16 of snow tomorrow into Sunday so it looks like I might be be cross training with the kids and the family toboggan.

Winter is finally here in New England and so are the colds and flu's that accompany it.
I generally have to scrap a workout for one reason or another - illness, time, etc.
What I want to know is since I am in the base phase - am I better off dropping the quality/speedwork workout (bike & run) or the zone 1-2 endurance workout?
My focus is primarily sprint-olympic.
Last winter I trained long and slow and as a result I raced long and slow for the shorter distances.
I have been throwing in some light speedwork during the week and I've noticed great gains in fitness. I've been careful not to overdo it knowing that there is still lots more time and training to be done so that I won't blow up before the season gets here.
For example... I took the last few days off because I wasn't feeling well and the family needed me more than I needed to work out.
So... I'm going to work out this afternoon and I am wondering... do I try that speed work that I missed two days ago, or should I just go for a longer easy run. My instinct tells me to go for that long easy run... though my weekends are devoted to my long bike and long run. I've noticed that my light speedwork during the week has lead to reduced hear rates during my long runs and bikes on the weekends.
I guess I'm fighting the urge to go fast early in the season and I just need to hear from everyone to not rush it...
:)
Thanks,
Matt
