I've been a few times and we've mostly stayed in house rentals. I can't recall the exact neighborhood, but toward the far end of Alii drive. There are homes and condo resorts that were fairly decent but no room service or turn down service ;)

i live hear in kona, the Royal Kona's cool so it the Sheraton (they have a great pool and kid friendly stuff), the king kamehameha is also cool, right down town. like tri bro said, there are a ton of sweet houses for rent down town that look great to stay in if you want to go that rout. i'll be happy to get you some ph #'s if you'd like i run Alii just about everyday and it'd be no problem.
if you wanted to stay up in waikoloa, there are a ton of hotel to chose from but your about 25 miles north of town.

Morning! Can anyone recommend a nice place to stay in Kona? Somewhere that is on the 'nicer' side? Since I am taking the family, I feel obligated to give them a good stay. We have been looking at the Royal Kona Resort, the Sheraton etc. Four Seasons is way out of my price range unfortunately, lol. But again, something nice, kid friendly and not too far from town.
