Just wanted to let you guys know that I took a class a few weeks ago @ MIT; Yoga for Triathletes. Thought that it was ok; but after I got the DVD's and used them at home I am a firm believer of Yoga. I now throw it in with my daily workouts once a day. Just curious anyway have any positives or even negatives about doing Yoga while training?

I started doing some Yoga in the off season (winter) to help with my flexibility. It seemed to be helping but then once I got busy, it's the first thing I drop to make sure I get everything else in. Good idea just not enough hours in the day for it all.

It really helps prevent injury when you are training, even more so w/distance. I always add it in when training for a marathon. Sometimes we "neglect" stretching due to time constraints etc., but it makes a HUGE difference. Even if you do a yoga or stretching class a couple times a week, it will help your performance. At least it has w/mine:)

Not just from from a flexibility stand point, but yoga can also help strengthen your core muscles. That can help your performance by making it easier to maintain good form throughout your race.

I know that I always have a better workout if I stretch before and usually feel less soreness later on if I stretch afterwards. I personally haven't tried yoga but I want to add it into my workouts for all of the benefits already mentioned.

So now we should be swimming, biking, running, lifting weights and doing yoga? My 15-20 hr weeks of S/B/R leave me rather drained as is. How do you fit it in? I guess I need to turn pro/get sponsors/not work so I can do all of this.

I was JUST going to post something on this today. I started sweaty (Bikram) yoga 2 months ago when I could not run to suplement my swimming and biking. Let me tell you how HARD it is! I go about 5-6 times a week and alternate Bikram(90 min) with a Hot Power (vynassa 60-90 min depending on the day) class . The Bikram has totally helped me with flexability and strength and the Power has helped with upper body strength which has helped with my swimming. I think that coupled with my cycling has made my transition back to running relatively pain free and I have maintained my strength and cardio. Now that I am running again, I am back to mostly the Bikram. I would highly recommend it.

I don't work or have kids so it is easy to fit in. If I do go back though, I would still be able to squeeze it in 4x a week though. Swim before work, bike commute to and from, run at lunch and Yoga in the evening (they have an 8:15 pm class here).

Obvious benefits, but beware. I kind of overdid it a few weeks ago and ended up with some funky pain that impeded running. Had to back down for about two weeks.

Was it the yoga or did I have it coming? I don't know for sure, but it was one of those balance on one foot moves that put more pressure on my ankle than I liked.

Not a big fan of yoga, but I do pilates religiously.
