Question for WA and OR people....
I'd say July through September for Central Oregon.
Hey... let me add a part two to this question... I'm thinking of taking a hiking/backpacking trip there this summer. Any places I should definitely check out? Any spots that I could combine with some kind of cycling? Rock climbing? I know that Tribro is up there, and there are quite a few others. Any info would be great.
The joke is summer starts July 5th. I would say July-September. It was 80 last Saturday, but tomorrow , snow and a high of 47 they say. UGGGG. This is not normal however. The good thing is you can pretty much (in the Seattle area) ride all year and this weather we are having is no worse than we have most of time in the winter.
Shiba--WHERE exactly??? Tribro is in central Oregon, about a 6 hour drive south of Seattle. There are mountain/resort areas in both.
hiking Goat Rock Wilderness is fabulous
or circle Mt Rainier (good long weekend backpacking trip)
or circle Mt Hood (good long weekend backpacking trip)
call the rangers for bug season updates on any of these
cycling in OR: try the Willamette Valley or the coast or Bend or the Wallowas
if you want to consider timing as well as weather, go after Labor Day when the vacation traffic dies out; the weather's usually good into October
For Coastal Washington my suggestions would be anytime August thru early October but come prepared for anything. Even on a warm day you will still need warm clothes for nightime. We are gearing up for snow and ice at the coast this weekend--but still plan on digging for clams!
My husband and I did a really cool biking trip thru the San Juan Islands a few years ago. You catch a ferry in Seattle and there are fun places to camp, crazy mountains to ride up( one we still complain about!) and just beautiful scenery. San Juan is your biggest and most touristy, Friday Harbor is the most remote beautiful setting--just you and the horses. There are lighthouses to ride past and a shark sanctuary and the locals are really nice about leaving room on the road for everyone.

Not sure exactly. I'm going with a buddy, and I can't really get in touch with him because he's in South America until June. So, at this point, I am just trying to get ideas and formulate several ideas so that we can put them all together when he gets back.
i did a drive down to santa cruz last aug. and cam back up the coast to bc. defiently stop in newport or. if ya like beer and good food that is a must. great scenery and just a cool spot.
you really can't go wrong anywher eis the pacific northwest.
if ya ever get across the border, check out vancouver island. you will not be disapointed.
If you are up here in the Seattle area there are a LOT of hiking opportunities in the Cascades and Olympics, as well as hikes in the park (Rainier) . The Cascade Cycling clube has lots of info/maps for local rides. There are MANY rides that take you out of the city. I also have some books with rides , I can copy and fax them to you if you would like. Lots of them include hills :)
So September would be acceptable on the coast of WA and OR?
I'm trying to plan my Canada - Mexico time line.

Yes, well any month is suspect now. We had snow yesterday and this morning if you can believe it ! .
September is probably your best bet for the Oregon coast. Often in the summer, the coast gets quite foggy, but in the fall it's usually beautiful. We've had a banner snow year this year, with snow yesterday at low elevations. I think the mountain trails, lakes, peaks, etc. will not be clear of snow until late this year. Personally, I like the wilderness areas around Mt. Jefferson and the three sisters, as well as the Wallowas, all in Oregon. Washington has some beautiful areas too, although they tend to have more people and be more crowded in the wilderness areas. Bicycling around the San Juans is great, as is the Oregon coast. Best thing about the Oregon coast is that there's a campground every 10 - 20 miles or so, but be sure to make campground reservations, especially on weekends in the summer. Many campgrounds have special hiker/biker spots set aside, too.

If you had to pick two months in the year where the weather was the best for biking in Washington and Oregon, what would it be?
Random, I know. ;p Thank you.
