use of protein shakes before race (week before)
Salt lick?

And protein shakes? The 500-1,000 calorie kind? I assume you use them for recovery after 2 hour runs or 4 hour bikes? Then sure, drink away. Anything less you are adding more calories than your burned.
+1 on the salt lick... that is the first thing that popped in my head! But Sooner and I do live in Texas.
But seriously....Depending on your race length, your sweat production, and the heat, electrolytes may help you. As long as you have been using them consistently in training to get a handle on how much you need, then sure, they can be helpful. I have personally never used them. Gatorade and gels, etc, have electrolytes too.
In my opinion, if you feel that you don't get enough calories and protein from a healthy diet, then sure, drink them. I don't use any supplements at all, except a vitamin, and I feel that protein shakes are a waste of money for me. I get everything I need through my diet. As for high protein diets up until race day, I dunno about that. I think that you should eat moderate balanced meals the day before, maybe a little lopsided toward carb heavy.
I hoping you meant salt tablets. Depends on the race distance, temperature and how much you sweat. They are just meant to replace the salts you lose sweating. I typically don't use them, but I'm mostly running sprint events.
And I use a shake after each hard workout, roughly 3:1 ratio of carbs to protein. And will typically have one for breakfast on race day. Good part of recovery.
But in general with nutrition and tri's, if you haven't been doing it for awhile now and the race is approaching, just stick with what you know.
I drink an 8oz shake (~120 calories) every morning before I work out. For me it is not about getting more protein--I like the taste and I feel like it sits a lot better in my stomach than eating solid food.
As for advice--if you have been drinking shakes throughout your training, I would say you should continue with it. If your body is used to it, I don't see that you are going to have any problems. If you are not currently using them, figure out if you need them to supplement your diet or if they will benefit you in any way. Just make sure you have enough energy intake for maximum energy output on race day.
in my opinion keep up whatever you were doing prior to race week. my soph year of hs i cut out take protein shakes the week before my confrence track meet, i just felt weak on race day, it wasn't until almost a year later that i realized changed my nutrition right before the race was an awful idea.
Protein shakes are a waste of money. Chocolate milk is just as effective and cheaper.
You dont need the extra protein from the shake if you are consuming a proper diet. The sheer number of calories in those chakes is over kill for anyone besides a highly trained high school athlete, whos still growing and really cant get enough cals. But then again, it would be better to get those cals with real foods like fruits and veggies.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Not 100 sure about this; if you use a good protein shake with low carbs and skin milk NO WAY is Chocolate milk better and cheaper. Do you realize how much sugar is in Chocolate milk. I take a Meal Replacement once a day and will sometimes make Protein Shakes. But I wouldn't change any diet plans the week before or anything.

Not really into this debate since in my opinion, protein shake without tons of sugar tastes like %@#, + you don't need it if you have a balanced diet like most of people said. As for electrolytes, dilute half of a Gatorade with water should do it. I am not sure we can discuss about a particular one week diet that could change anything to your results... but a classic before race day would be carbohydrate loading (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbohydrate_loading).
Here is an interesting article concerning protein intake DURING a race event :

Hi, anyone able to advise a tri newbie if drinking protein shakes up until the day of the race is good or not? also, what are the benefits to using salt licks during the race itself?
thanks!
