I did Chicago a couple of years ago and absolutely loved the tour of the city from the marathon route. I thought it would be cool to pick one a year and decided NYC would be next. It appears there is no general entry though. Or am I missing something?

NY Marathon has Basically FOUR methods for getting in, according to the website at: http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/entrantinfo/applyfor2008.php

The Lottery is the basic entry, and anyone who doesn't qualify for an automatic entry/registration gets placed in the general lottery. Once in the lottery, you will have three years to get in. If after three years you don't get in, you get in automatically on the fourth year.

If you are a member of the New York Road Runners, you can get in automatically if you do a certain number of NYRR approved races during the year, and I think that you have to volunteer at an event as well.

If you are fast, like, "Boston" fast, you can get in based on a qualifying time. Actually, now that I look at it, I think they are more lenient than Boston.

Finally, you can get in by raising money for charity. More information at: http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/entrantinfo/applyfor2008.php

Hope this helps. I am actually looking into doing it as well, because I'm probably moving to New York next year.

The qualifying times for NYC are a slightly more strict for marathon qualifying. Under 35 years old for Boston requires a 3:10 but NYC requires a 2:55. However, NYC offers qualifying by 1/2 marathon and Boston doesn't. NYC has become more lenient in that they have "raised" this QT to 1:23.

Ientered the lottery twice and was lucky enough to be selected both times. 2 of my friends were denied on their 1st lottery try but gained entry on the 2nd.

It is worth the effort to get in. It is an amazing experience to run through the 5 buroughs with 40,000 other people.

If you are a NYRR member you can to run 9 NYRR qualifier races in the calendar year before and volunteer for 1 event. I am planning to run NYC in 2009 and this is the approach I decided to take. Signing up for a bunch of road races so far in Dec, Jan, Feb has helped me keep running all winter, which is great. It's been a fun and helpful way for me to stay motivated and get out and run even when it's dark and cold and i just want to stay inside all winter.

I didn't realize it's always a lottery. Huh. Well... I want to do it so I guess I'm going to enter the lottery. If I don't get in I guess I'll go to Philly or DC.

Thanks for the info!

Philly is a quality marathon that is growing more and more each year. Marine Corps in DC is a pretty amazing experience that I would put quite a few notches above Philly in terms of overall experience (crowds, scenery, beauty of course, etc.).

Can you tell me a little more about the NYRR? Is the club itself expensive? Are the qualifier races expensive? How big is it? I am basically doing some advance research for the girlfriend, and slightly more advance research for me. She'll be there in August, and I'm following sometime around December. It'd be great to have someplace for her to connect once she gets there. PM or email if you don't want to post it here.
