The best antioxidant?
I hear that wine and chocolate are antioxidants, so I like to make sure I get plenty of those into my system as often as possible. :D
Wine, Chocolate, and COFFEE!! It's the triple crown of happiness.

It is tough to say what is the "best" antioxident. There is a ton of conflicting research out there and the "popular" one recently is lycopene. My take is that none are necesarily better than others, they are all pretty good.

Mine (in addition to chocolate, wine and coffee!) is a glutathione accelerator called MaxGXL (I see that there is an ad for this on this web site!). I will vouch for the product as I have definitely seen results for myself, but more importantly for my friends and family who are in a more senior age group. Check out the info for yourself, and let me know if you have any questions!
How timely that CNN (carnage, nukes, & napalm) just posted this article today.
I take mine in the form of coffee, beer, and chocolate. In that order :-)
I'm def. all about hitting up some good chocolate milk afterwards.
Keeps the kid in me still by getting all excited for something I didn't really get to have as a kid if that makes any sense.
I'm with you, cowgirl!
Beer is also something I enjoy after a race, and is something I didn't get to have as a kid either ;)

I know its not as exciting as taking a supplement, but the way to get best antioxidant punch is probably simply to eat lots of a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and other plant-derived foods (beer, chocolate, and wine fall into this category). Studies on the health- and performance-benefits of individual antioxidants have yielded mixed results (as in the above cnn link), but research consistently shows the benefits of consumption of plants, especially the colorful ones.

I've been saying it all along... supplements are junk. Well... technically, I've just been repeating what Dr. Dean has been saying but let's not get hung up in the details.

My wife swears by dark chocolate covered plums - I prefer Extra Stout and if I really feel like a need a dose of antioxidants, I go with Imperial Stout. Actually I go with Imperial stout because the alcahol content is higher.
Pain is the sensation of weakness leaving the body!
Hmmm - I'll have to give that a try!
I tend to drink; acai, pomegranate, and blueberry juices daily, by far my favorites for antioxidants (other than the previously stated; beer, wine, chocolate). :p

"Its an addiction"
Not to disagree with anyone else about their choice of antioxidant, BUT from what I read, most substances like juices, berries, powders, etc. mostly pass through your body without much absorption into the cells of your body. They may seem like they work because you are...relieving yourself...more often (sometimes with some brilliant pee colour!), but are they getting rid of those nasty toxins and free radicals that cause cell damage over the long term?
The last time I mentioned the name of the supplement I take, I got nabbed for "free advertising" since the product is being sold under a direct sales model. I don't want to take that risk here because I love this forum, and I think the people who I have been conversing with are awesome!
Having said that, if anyone is interested, they can send me a private e-mail (see my profile).
Thanks!
I'm of the natural camp too. If antioxidants from fruits, nuts, berries, etc. just passed through our system with no effect, then our ancient hunter-gatherer ancestors must've been in a world of hurt without powders, pills, and supplements to use!
We pick a ton of berries in the summer season and freeze them. Blueberry/blackberry/raspberry/strawberry smoothies are my antioxidants of choice (with fresh raw high-in-Omega-3 eggs from the free-range chickens in my back yard, and raw milk from a friend's goat, no less ;-) Of course, there's also chocolate, pinot noir, and yerba mate as my other antioxidants of choice.

ewwww goat milk
Beer, wine, chocolate sound like a good way to do it. Well that and the berries I try and eat a small bowl of mixed berried every morning and dang it tastes good =)

I'll agree with Ironmom except for the part about the goats milk (hunter / gatherers didn't drink animal milk). I spent an entire summer in Idaho being force-fed raw milk and contemplated suicide every night after dinner it was so bad.
I'm all for supplements when what I'm trying to get in my body isn't readily available. Anti-oxidants are so plentiful it's pretty ridiculous to have to take 'em in pill form (latest study published actually indicated that anti-oxidant supplement-eaters tend to be less healthy than their non-supplement eating counterparts if I recall correctly).
In any case, a 1/4 melon, a cup of frozen mixed berries, a banana and whatever other frozen fruit (mango, pineapple) you can find in the freezer section once a day should get you all the anti-oxidants you need. If that's too much effort--Goji berries. They taste like crap, but you can swallow 'em whole like centrums.
Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.
I heard a lot of cross country teams use chocolate milk as a recovery drink, so I tried it and I love it. It tastes great after a long workout.
Also, I am a big fan of Brad King, a nutritionist in the "Sports Nutrition Hall of Fame". I see some people in this thread don't value supplements, and I'm sure there could be a great debate about it, and I myself lean more to the "natural camp" that's been mentioned, but I do take a small amount of supplements, including one Mr. King formulated from coffee berry, an antioxidant with an extremely high ORAC value. It's called X2O blast.
So between the chocolate milk and the blast product and a diet high in fruits and vegetables I think I get a good supply of antioxidants.
I have heard of the X2O product - a friend of mine at work uses it. He is a serious kick-boxer and weight lifter, and is very pro-supplements. I am looking into that product myself.
I did get him on MaxGXL, and he says it definitely improved his recovery, just as it did for me.
Thanks!
Dave
Haven't heard of the MaxGXL product, what's that about? Do you have a web-site for it? Being a cheap-skate, I really like the chocolate milk idea for recovery! But I'm always looking for ways to improve. If you can provide more info I'd like to take a look at it.
Absolutely!
You can get it here:

Since I have had much interest in the product from others, I decided to take advantage of the business side and became an associate. Hey - have to make some extra cash to support the purchase of a new tri-bike, etc, etc :)
Let me know if you have any questions!
Dave
A couple weeks ago, I finished my first triathlon of the season...Our season - Ontario, Canada. I know you Florida dudes are finishing up because it is getting too frickin' HOT! ok - I am envious ;)
Anyhow - posted my best time EVER! I did the Lakeside triathlon, part of the HSBC series.
Well, I have to say that I am convinced that MaxGXL is the real deal! I always felt that my recovery time was improving steadily while on the product. Now I know for SURE! This is very exciting!
Dave
I get my antioxidants via fuel; coffee, lots of berries and red, yellow and orange bell peppers
I drink coffee, green tea, lots of dark green veggies, tomatoes, and I love blueberries in my smoothies YUM!
Nothing to it, but to do it
...and of course beer and chocolate on occasion ;-)
Nothing to it, but to do it
A few days after this thread originally started, I was stuck in the waiting room before getting an x-ray of my foot. A lady sat next to me and started telling me all about this miracle drink she found that made her fell so much better. All I could think about was this thread. Mostly I was thinking about Ironmom's kids out gathering eggs and milking a neighbor's goat before breakfast. I bet they wish they could just get eggs and milk at the store like all their friends. :)
Hey, you're mocking the miracle drinks! I think I've tried all of them (I'm in network marketing so I get free bottles all the time, currently trying "Ionix Supreme." I've also tried Noni, Xango, Matol, Ezfuze, Mona Vie, Goyin and others that I'm forgetting now.
I think some of them are crap, some of them are probably very good, but who's going to spend $30 a week, per person in their family, to drink the stuff?
So I go back to- eat a good diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and take some reasonably priced supplements to round things out.
fruits and veggies. Vitamin E and a red caratenoid extracted primarily from algae (Haematococcus pluvialis). It's sold commercially as Astaxanthin, a naturally occurring carotenoid pigment. It's a powerful natural biological antioxidant (http://www.astaxanthin.org/).

Blueberries
A freaking super-food, eat a lot and eat often!
Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.
I'm all about the berries! Frozen bags at Cosco, throw them in with a protein shake, nothing better!
Blueberries, beer, tea, wine, dark chocolate, peppers.
Some great athletes have done wonderful things over the years just by eating at the right time and the right kinds of things...I've done the whole spectrum of supplements over the years and gave up that money pit and just went to good food at the right times, in the right amounts (portion control) ...I train well, recover well and keep my money local.

I am very interested in the role antioxidants play in recovery. My wife (a biologist) got me on a natural supplement that, I have to say, has really started giving me better recovery during training. Thoughts on this topic?
