Sounds like you are on track, and at least have a pretty good plan for tackling all the needed mileage. Do you have a nutrition plan for what you are eating during the week, and what you will eat during the race?

I think the one thing that it seems like you are lacking right now, is a clear plan for putting all the events together, and how you will stay hydrated/fed during the race.

As a side note, shouldn't this be in the newbie forum?

Your on the right track, use your job working nights a bit more to your advantage though.

What I mean is. When you get home from work, if you're not to tired, try and do a run 4x a week, and we'll save track workout fors daily. You need to be swimming 5+ days a week for 1hr+ a day, which will greatly improve your VO2 and your running capabilities. Next comes the bike, now I have nowhere near the idea of how your schedule looks, and how tired you are during the day, but if you wake up early, like before your wife goes to work etc, try and do a bike 4 days a week.

All those rides should be different, since its a little to late to be building base (which sounds like you a have a decent one anyway!), such as the following

Bike 1 - 40 Miles, easy , distance
Bike 2 - 20 Miles, Cadence (RPM) 97+
Bike 3 - 1hr Low Gear, push (imitate hills if possible)
Bike 4 - 30 Miles, easy, recovery

With those rides, a decent set of runs weekly, and a swim with a swim coach, I think you're on the right track to being a very successful athlete! Sorry for the long write-up, and I hope this is what you're looking for, since I got the jist you want to be serious, that is a pretty serious plan.

Make sure your putting in 10 hrs a week minimum if possible, but no more then 14. I personally do 20 just because I have the time, but my body is prepared for it, and I am use to it, doing 20 a week at your beginner status would only make you burnout or get hurt!

-GOOD LUCK!, Mabye you'll come to Florida and hit me up in a race lol.

-Kevin

Welcome. Your life will never be the same again. Food will taste better, clothes will be a bit looser, and you'll start drooling over carbon.

thanks guys, i am trying to take it pretty seriously. i'm now 33 and haven't been to active for a bunch of years. i did race MX for 9 years so did some cross training then.
i also just picked up John Friel's book "your first tri" this morning. i swam today and will use my bike on the trainer while my kids are playing today.
i will need a wetsuit for my sim, it is in a lake and i haven't done any open water swims other than recreational playin around.
what should i look for in a wet suit? i am 5'7" and around 180lbs.
hope to loose some of that weight though.

Welcome! Just be careful... it is addicting :)

Step 1: Just do. For training, just build up a schedule you can repeat right now. Sounds like you are doing that. Just get into the training pattern! Then start tweaking the schedule as family and time allows to start targeting certain training aspects -- and for tips there, you'll have to give us more info on your goals, age, history in sport, ability right now, etc. I have to say I very much disagree with some of the stuff from Kwschs above, so this is your friendly reminder not to trust everything you read on the internet -- although since you just read that here, it is your call if you should trust it! ;).

Wow diabetic would make it tricker... although it might also mean you have a much better understanding of your body as you start than most of us do. For a sprint nutrition is not as important for the average racer -- I think I've usually just done water, or sometimes a gel on the bike.

And no worries on which forum... otherwise it might have to be newbie and health. Some people just might miss it if they read by forum section.

For a wetsuit you could check out http://www.wetsuitrentals.com/ if you don't want to or can't buy one yet -- it can be a pretty big purchase if you aren't sure yet how much you like the sport. I've never used them but have heard pretty good reviews. There are also some local places around me that rent out suits, and do trial days. So you might want to check your area for any as well.

I would agree with Kylie.
It seems to me that what you're planning on doing (what you wrote in your first post), is a fine amount of training per week, at least in the beginning with a sprint as the goal, and a busy schedule. When I did my first triathlon I ran like 4 times total, the last month up to the race. So if your goal is just to begin and try out a triathlon, you can't go wrong no matter how much or little you're practicing.
About the nutrition I would say that a sprint probably won't take more than two hours, and dependent on how your body reacts (diabetic wise) of exercising for up to two hours, water would be enough for a beginning.

Well, at least good luck in may and have fun
