Hay, I'm about to buy a new pair of race wheels and have it narrowed down between the Zipp 808s and the new Zipp 1080s. Dose anyone have ether one of these wheel sets and could grace me with there opinion on them? Your input would be of much help.

I have the 808's and really enjoy them. They are very fast and they are zipps, so you can't really say anything bad about them. They are not the best for hilly courses or during windy conditions. That really depends on your cycling ability though. I think they are a great wheel for a race like IM Florida or any moderately flat course. Then again, I've used them in just about every tri I have entered so they are still durable. I would go with the 808's because they are not quite as deep as the 1080s and you may get more use out of them. Hope this helped.

I would go with the 808's. I think that you would get alot more use out of them than the 1080's. If there is any wind at all, the 1080's will be alot more of a pain than the 808's already are in a cross wind.

I've used both. I don't have any issues with riding them in crosswinds, but that'll depend on your personal bike-handling skills and your weight (I weigh 164 lbs). Crosswinds amplify the benefits of deep wheels (I don't know why people won't run discs in windy conditions, since that's when they're the most helpful), but can cause squirrely handling for deeper wheels (especially the front wheel). The 1080s are faster, but won't do you any good if you're uncomfortable handling them. I went with a 1080 for myself. If you ARE leaning towards 808s, maybe consider a 1080 rear/808 front.

Gator,
Maybe I'm naive, but can you explain what you mean about deep wheels being more beneficial in xwinds? I'm in the same situation (404, 808, 1080, disc, mix and match) and could use the input. I always thought that would slow you down.

There's a lot of stuff about it, but this gets a good chunk of it all at once:

wow thanks for the huge response, i think that i am going to go with the 808s and just wanted a conformation before i spend the money. i live in Kailua-Kona and deal with the crazy winds of the Queen K everyday so i think that the 1080s are going to be a little deep. thanks again many mahalos.
