The first question I have is, Should I do it?

The reason I am posting is becuase a group of freinds want to do it as kind of an 18 year Bday present, (i don't know how else to describe it lol).

I figure by the time im at age 18, (16 now) I will have 3 years of training under my belt, and should be ok for it.

I really was looking forward to doing it, as my dream is to complete an IM race, and im so eager :D.

Would this be bad for my body, should i wait? Please try and help me make a descision.

By the way, I only plan on doing 1 IM at 18, and sticking to oly and sprint distance otherwise. I will pick up IM again at 23+, so thats why I was thinking It can't really hurt my body to much in the long run!

Thanks!

Most of the stuff I've heard from trainers suggests that the kind of training you would want to do for an ironman could be damaging at your age.......if you insist on doing it......keep your training miles lower

overall I recommend to wait bro

It is better to hurt from doing something than from doing nothing...

if you plan to take 5 years off after your first one, what is the point in trying to finish one so early? IM requires a huge monetary investment....will you be able to afford that right before college?

Most males don't finish growing until they're in their early 20's. Your growth (epiphyseal) plates in the ends of your long bones can be damaged by excessive stress prior to that. The demands of an IM race day are not that hard, but the training necessary to make it happen can be brutal. You open yourself up for tons stress to a still growing body. You're 16 now...stay in the short races for at least a few more years...gain experience, knowledge, race smarts. Younglings have done IM's (I think the youngest is 13) but that doesn't mean it's a good thing. I saw a young lad at Chesssie Man last year doing the IM and everyone thought it was great...I thought "You're risking your future health for this?"
Your decision, but I vote for later.

I don't have tons of experience but I agree with the others and hold off a few years. My opinion being that you can do smaller races, gain the knowledge. There is always the "what if's" and "I know I can do it" things but you could be risking your body. Only got one of 'em and risking it early may damage for possibly races in the future. Stay on this site and read up on things, you'll def. learn alot.

If this is your dream, there's no need to rush into it. Everyone here has given you good advice. That said, I did watch a 14 year old complete an IM last fall (Chesapeake Man on Maryland's eastern shore).

Have you done any 1/2 irons? Maybe you should do a few of those first and see what you think. If you are happy with your time and you can walk within a few days then sure, do whatever you want. At least then you're making an more informed decesion.

Exactly, what's the rush? Enjoy your youth, race fast and hard in the short distances, get to know the sport and graduate to the longer races when you feel you need a new challange.

Have you ever looked at the overall results of the various age groups? Some of the strongest Triathletes are on the other side of 30.

Pain is the sensation of weakness leaving the body!
