"Swim Suit" and Tri Shorts
Assuming your Speedo statement means you don't wanna wear the little guys. What about the long speedo style... tri short length. My ex would always go that route for swim training.
Once I realized that I was the only clown wearing baggy shorts at the pool who was working out I broke down and bought the long speedos and have been really happy with them. I feel so much faster in the water, plus the long speedos don't look that much different than the tri shorts - especially in the water.

I wear the speedos, not the little guys, and they work great. Theyre just as long as my tri shorts and I think i got em for 20 bucks or something. Ive had mine for over a year and they have held up great.
Taking myself off the DL this weekend....3 days and counting
3 letters TYR TYR TYR,, stuff last and doesn't become too revealing ever, great in the pool,, although for racing I use Zoot 8 inch
i still wear any running shorts that happen to be clean for pool workout swims. i'm thinking any drag is good for building up strength and endurance. it's like swinging that weighted bat before facing live pitching. maybe i'm wrong..anyone, anyone??
Search Amazon for "Jammer." I believe that's what you're looking for, and the others are referring to.

Maybe, but I wouldn't suggest it to a newbie. I just started swimming and feel noticeably better without the baggy shorts. My form is bad enough without the drag.

I would think that if you want to develop your upper body strength that you use some hand paddles and scrap the baggy shorts.

What's wrong with speedos? Everyone who's fast wears them for training (except Latin guys.....I'm still not sure why, though.....must be one of those momma's boy things).

IMO, I think Speedos last longer. I think TYR breaks down a lot faster, although, Desiree Ficker is sponsored by them, so I guess I can't complain ;)

Long Speedos here too. The "fruit smugglers" were cheaper, but my girlfriend would kill me :-)

That's why they make drag suits.

I would think you would wear the the speedo's with a long length to them, if I was a guy I'd be going down that route. (lol)
That's kinda the point. Like aero helmets, I think some people might look like they are trying a bit too hard in speedo's swimming 2 minute 100 meters.
Damn, does this mean I have to turn my speedos back in? :-(

dont forget those unsightly tan lines with the speedos, it's already bad enough with the farmer tan from the cycling jersey
Actually I find the speedo-tan ideal. You get nice and tan all the way up to you-know-where (especially if you wear the proper "yeah-this-is-what-my-ass-crack-looks-like" size). Only a select few actually see the pasty, white part (well, not that few if you're as big of a run-by mooning fan as I am). Besides, it completely gets rid of the farmer's tan if you do it right.
If not so many of you were wasting company time on this website, I'd glady post a sample photo of the REALLY good speedo-tan I gots goin' on.

If I wasn't wasting time they wouldn't need so many people working here. Then unemployment would rise. I simply being patriotic.
I love this site. I do not love "grape smugglers" or worrying about tan lines. TriGator probably gives the best advice I've read in these forums. Probably from personal experience and research, but I don't think I'm interested in trying the short grippy speedos. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Thanks for all the good advice. I've ordered a pair of Speedo Jammers for $20 from a certain website. War Eagle by the way.

When competing as a swimmer I got into the habit of wearing a drag suit (still using the same Speedo version from 6 years ago) with an old, worn out racing suit underneath. The truly fast swimmers will roll in these for training, not shave until their A race, and grow out their hair for extra drag in the water. It's an awesome feeling being shaved and tapered for your top races after spending 4 months letting everything grow. Though Gator's later comment regarding sizing is pretty accurate. At least 2 sizes smaller than your waist. Just make sure you're very dilligent in shaving or the timers may get more than they bargained for when on the blocks...
I forgot to add, there's this Mexican guy who insists on wearing a full-on banana hammock when training at Bally's Century City in Chicago. He's not that sexy, but he's not needlessly self-conscious.
I either wear jammers or those not quite banana hammock and not quite jammer length shorts (think short running shorts length). Just cant get quite handle the fruit smuggler image, I dont think im necessarily over weight but at the same point I don't quite have the image to pull that off imo.

It is not the brand that is better ie Speedo vs TYR, it is the Fabric. Go for a Poly suit , not a lycra blend and it will last for years. I have a suit now that I have had for 5 years and going strong. If you get the long ones you will like them. My husband has been swimming in his for over a year (4x a week) and they look brand new.

Mike has had suits last him until he lost 'em (I think one was at about 8 years) and mine has lasted me the last year and a half without showing wear. Sooooo awesome!

+1 on the running shorts. I am a try newbie and have been swimming for about 5 months now. I have quite a few pairs of running shorts built up over quite a few years and I feel like they are more than adequate in the water. I don't use them for the drag (which I don't think is very much) or anything like that---just the convenience. When I get faster in the water I may consider the switch, but for now there is enough other fun Tri stuff to buy that I can wait on the racing suits.

And tights under the speedo for a week or so after the shave. I wear a size "queen" something-or-other.

Not fast enough.

Most tri shorts that you buy come with a label that reads "do not use in chlorinated pools". Apparently this ruins them. So I've been swimming in my old tri shorts and sure enough, they start breaking up and getting really thin. I don't want to dump a bunch of money on some expensive tri shorts when all I want to do in them is swim in the pool. Any suggestions? No speedo suggestions please. I know they're cheaper, but it's not worth it.
