Hello everyone!

I am new to the sport and have signed up for two sprint tris this spring/summer (Azalea Festival in April and White Lake in May) and hope to do another in the fall - with the ultimate goal of doing Olymp. length tris next year. I'm an okay runner and same for cycling but downright terrible at swimming. Thanks to this website I have ordered the Total Immersion DVD!

If anyone has great tips on fitting in their workouts, please feel free to share w/ me. In addition to working full time, I also have a very active toddler (I like to think of her as my future triathlete) so I have to really manage my time wisely.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's posts and receiving great advice.

Congrats on signing up for the tris and welcome to the site! I think you'll find the Total Immersion DVD very helpful.

I don't have children personally, but have friends and brothers who do. I think the best advice I've heard from others on the site and articles I've read is to PLAN. Plan your workouts and plan your time with the family. Sit down every Sunday evening and put together a schedule for the week. Try to stick to that schedule, and if you can try to include the family in training. Trips to the park to run, hikes for cross training, etc.

I'm sure others can offer more specific ideas and advice. But just my 2 cents worth :)

just a quick update new tri mom, You may want to repost your question with the question in the title in the newbie section.

Sometimes the intro posts get pushed down the queue as more posts and threads get started. So not everyone will click to read your intro, but If the have question up front you're more likely to get some feedback.

btw: happy birthday!

Tribro- Thanks for the advice and the tip about bumping up! I am going to try that.

camberger - I actually have not watched it yet. :( I came down with a double sinus infection last week and have not been back to the pool. BUT I am going to watch it this week and hopefully get back in the pool by Friday. Its basically a DVD about swim technique and how to swim smarter instead of harder. I think I saw a recommendation for in the swimming section by someone who said they couldn't afford (time or money) a coach so they just used the DVD. Here is the link to the TI website:

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement: this cold has really floored me - it started as the sniffles and ended up as a full blown strep throat, laryngitis, bronchitis and me feeling like I wanted to put my head in the gas oven. I was up to 20 lengths in the pool, 40 k's on the bike, and 5 miles running. So now I guess it might be back to the drawing board! I am trying not to get frustrated and make sure I get well before I hit the pool etc. again. I haven't had a cold since 2000 - and I remember it well because it was the same thing. I went on an all expenses paid trip to a conference in Florida - and ended up spending the whole time in my bed!!! This is the one year I have not had a flu shot. YOu live in Cary, I am in Fayetteville. I hope we can keep in touch once in a while and maybe see each other at the Azalea. Take care. Let me know what you think of the video. I have a GREAT swim coach who is also doing triathlons - she has been the best find I ever made as I am a terrible swimmer!

I'm a Mom of two and have been squeezing in workouts whenever I can for the past 3-4 years. My life saver is our health club which my kids love that allows me to leave to ride/run up to two hours and leave a cell phone number. If you do not have something like this your best bet is to get up early (before a toddler- insanely early) and run or ride a trainer. Creativity is the key and there are ways to steal a 30 min run during a lunch break, spin class before school pick-up even simulate a swim workout at home with stretch cords.
Speaking of swimming, although I am still not a stellar swimmer I wanted to pass on the fact that Total Immersion is the absolute best, most helpful way to improve your swim. I side-stroked my first 6 tri's and have practiced TI for 2 years and now feel so much more confident. My freestyle is slow but others have said how graceful I look (yeah, it takes all day but I sure look pretty!), I guess I really conserve for the bike and run.
Good luck with your training... it's awesome youre going for it!
