Speed Workouts on a Treadmill?
Speed workouts on the TM always worked for me. Still would if I had access to one! Just always followed my usual workout...usually 800's or mile repeats. Make sure you raise the incline to 1 or 1.5. Some folks say they always feel less beat up using a TM for speed work.

torture, absolute torture. winter maybe if you were absolutly desperate, but it's spring out--hit the track. I haven't read the article and I'm sure there must be some salient points, but I can't think of anything that would get me on a dreadmill for that amount of time or really any amount of time.
Sorry, I'd give it a nay and look up track speed work, intervals and tempo runs.

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.

+1 This is what I do in the winter when it is too "cold" here in Texas. Meh. But since it isn't winter any more, I'm with cayman. Go with the Yasso 800 at your local High School track. The simplicity - and effectiveness - are pure genious:

That does sound like a pretty good workout, thanks for sharing that TriSooner.
Speed work on the TM is tough and I recommend a good warm-up and stretch before the workout. I also recommend taking it down a notch. I usually run 400's at 1:25-1:28 on the track but back off to 1:35 on the TM.
DEFINATELY! I love doing them on a TM. I missed not haveing one last sumer/fall since I was not working (we had a gym) and don't have a gym membersip. The track at the HS by me actually charges a fee to use it, so always just went with the TM. I plug in the ipod and go. It can be boring, but it's not like you are doing 20 miles.
Since not having one, I have been using the multipurpose trail near my home now , it is marked every 1/2 and mile so it is doable that way.
I did all my speed workouts on the treadmill with no problems. Great thing is/was you can easily track your intervals and control your pace. One of my favorites I've done is:
1/2 work to rest. Run as fast as you can 1/4, then 1/2, 3/4, 1, 3/4, 1/2 and finally 1/4. In between you rest/light jog for 1/2 the time it took you to do the distance. So if you run a 90 second 1/4 mile, then you rest/jog for 45 sec then do your 1/2 mile, rest for half the time that took and so on.
I also did some mile repeats (up to 7) with 1 minute rest in between and other speed work. For me, I find it much easier to do these and keep track of things on a treadmill. But then again I did 2-19 milers, 1-20 miler and several runs over 17 miles on treadmills this winter.

I definitely use it for speed, but only to force myself to a certain pace. For some guys/gals the treadmill doesn't roll fast enough for what they are looking for. For me, it's fine. I do intervals for 8 minutes at or a little faster than my 5K speed, then drop the speed for recovery for 3 minutes. This is a great little interval workout to do and the treadmill helps me to force my speed and keeps me from overdoing it.
Yuck to treadmills. If it works for you-saweetness. I'm definilty the out on a track person. Love the track! Now, cold cold cold days here in Cleveland, I'll suck it up on go on the TM. Not my favorite of workouts.

Just wondering what all your thoughts were on doing speed work on a treadmill. In this months edition of Triathlete Mag. Greg Bennet talked about his hardest workout ever being an hour and a half of all out speed intervals on a treadmill. I of course am not looking to do an hour and a half just wanting to find other ways to mix it up yah know. Any suggestions on a workout to do or a YAY/NAY on the idea in general? Thanks in advance.
