Triathlon Relay Team
i've relayed. it's fun and fast - pass the chip and go (transition rules may vary depending on the race). you don't have to save anything in the swim, just go bttw. it's also hard in that you might find yourself wishing you were out there on the other legs (because you know you can).
Success comes before work only in the dictionary
I haven't done one yet, am planning on it with my dad and sister. My sister is much better than we are at the swim since she swam in college, my dad is pretty close to my speed on the bike, and I am much better at running...so we think in an olympic relay, we could probably place pretty high, just need to find one.
I'm sure it'll be fun though

Right on! This is how my buddies & I got started in triathlon a few years ago. We do the same relay each year for tradition; we actually won it last year! The fun part is just hammering in your strongest discipline without having to worry about saving energy for the next leg.
Transitions go smoothly if you work out the logistics with your teammates beforehand, i.e. where in the transition area to meet to exchange the timing chip.
Have fun with it!
JSK, most of the tris I did last year have a relay option, so shouldn't be too hard to find an Oly relay in your area.
Great topic. I've been thinking of doing a relay with my kids. My daughter is a good swimmer and my son is a great runner. I think it would be fun to do this as a family.
I had wondered how the transitions worked. Do events have a certain place to exchange the chip in the transition area or is that something you work out between your team?
I did a couple relays a few years ago.
If I remember right there was a small seperate area for exchanges in TA. A race official was there to make sure everything went okay. We just passed the timing chip.

Excellent! That sounds awesome!
Last year I did the Steamboat Springs tri as a relay with my wife and father-in-law. Since we were all at very different levels it was more about having fun than being competitive. Our timing chip was on a velcro ankle strap and we practiced the exchange after setting up in the transition area. Everyone had a blast.

In the race we do, the race director wants the exchanges to take place at your transition area. This was loosely enforced, but in this case it helps to have the person who isn't "next" to act as as a spotter, i.e. the runner watches for the swimmer & signals the biker to be ready. Hopefully this makes sense. I've only sone this one, so it's probably different from race to race.

I have let a couple of co-workers talk me into signing up for a sprint tri relay event in a couple of weeks. I figured that it may be a good way to help encourage a couple of friends to get some exposure to Triathlon that they may not normally have. I get to do the swim and I am letting one of them ride my bike, which is tough because even though my Baby isn't the prettiest on the circuit, its still mine. I showed him the video of the guy hitting the curb at the tour in Belgium and told him he better not let that happen to my bike. ;-)
Anyway, has anyone else done a relay? If so, what can we expect in the transitions? I suspect that the passing of the baton if you will would be the actual timing chip, but that is just a guess.
