I had a HRM that died on me just after a tri and so I got a Polar RS200sd that I hadn't tried to swim with until today and found out that it does not transmit underwater. What HRM's do you guys use that for sure transmit underwater?

I used to have a cheap 75 dollar Timex one that worked well under water. It doesnt have split times or really anything on it but a clock and a timer, but it does work well under water.

The Polars with the hard, plastic strap work underwater but they're pretty uncomfortable for everything else. My new Polar with the comfy strap does not stay on very well while swimming.

Why are you so sure it has to do with the water? I doubt that if everything is actually waterproof enough to be in the water that it wouldn't work. Did it pick up at all or did it just lose signal when you started swimming? You do have to wear the strap really tight and some people even use little suspender things to help keep it in place.

Anyways, my Garmin Edge works fine in the water, but that's probably not the answer you were looking for. (I use it for open water swimming in a waterproof pouch)

Yeah the garmin HRM strap works in water the actual units themselves (Edge and Forerunner) aren't built for it and need to be protected from the water in some manner.

My Polar was usable on the swim. I got ssick of it sliding off during flip turns, but Polars (from a few years back) were waterproof.

My Polas S525 works like a charm. I would verify the chest strap was positioned correctly, as I BELIEVE if it is waterproof, it SHOULD (don't quote me) work in water. I use mine all the time, and it is one of the older hard straps, used to it so it does not bug me at all.

In response to GGehrke, if I sat on the edge the HRM worked but once I got in the water it would stop. So to test that it was just the water I got out again and sure enough it started working again.

It might also be a range issue. When you're sitting on the side of the pool, I'm assuming your wrist is pretty close to your chest. But when you're swimming, and your hand is way above your head, then it might just be barely out of range or something.

I thought the problem with transmitting HR with a polar watch in a pool was the chemical makeup of the pool? I haven't tried mine in fresh or saltwater yet so I can't say for sure.

Interesting... I've got a cheapie Polar RS100 and it works just great in the pool. Maybe you need a new battery for the transmitter?

I use Suunto Memory Belt for swimming. It is about 170 bucks and works quite well in the pool. Only disadvantage is that you do not see the HR until you get it connected to computer. You also can not record laps unless you own Suunto T6. The memory belt is just that - a HR memory belt that records your HR for up to 200.000 beats - so it is good for times when you can not or do not want to have watch on you. I use it along with T6 and it works quite well.

S625 works under water as well so I would be surprised if RS200 did not work. It uses the same technology.

My S150 worked during the swim. And my new S625X works well in the water.

I have a Forerunner 305, but I haven't done any triathlons yet. I know the watch itself isn't waterproof, so I'm not planning on swimming with the watch. But as I'm going to use a tri suit I don't want to waste time putting on my HR strap. Is it ok to swim with this strap?

Yes, you can swim with the Forerunner HRM strap on.

Tried out my Polar F6 for the first time in the pool today and it worked fine.

It might be that when you're swimming the sensors on the sensors may be coming slightly unstuck from your chest. Maybe try confirming that the strap is tight enough that it won't come unstuck even a bit. Your forward movement through the water might be enough to cause it to come slightly unseated which could make it difficult for it to get a solid reading.
