Trucks and Bikes

When I travel with the bikes, I use a truck with a camper shell. The bikes cannot stand up in the back without the front wheel off. I like the bikes inside so that rules out a hitch mount (which I already have). I normally put one on each side propped up against the wheel well and fasten them down with bungee cords. This works ok most of the time but I really don't like the fork touching the floor. I'm looking for a better way of traveling with them inside the back of the truck. I have fork mounts but don't want to mount them to the truck bed. Other than rigging something, is there a product or a better method? It's a long shot but it's been bugging me so I figured I'd ask.

Not sure why you are opposed to rigging something... the board across the bed with the fork mounts mounted to that seems to work really well from what I've seen, and is really cheap.

I just keep 'em all in my car... front wheels are off and everything fits nice and snug.

Yakima Beddy Jo. I have used one for a long time.

Here's a cheaper alternative:

a board just wide enough to fit in the slots of your bedliner. You can bolt skewer mounts to the board. It's cheap, easy, and can fit 4 bikes. I used to have an isuzu rodeo, and I just bolted the skewer mounts to the back of the rear seats, with a reinforcing plate inserted on the back side. Pretty simple.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Yeah, I used two fork mounts bolted to a 2x6 for years. Works well, cheap and easy. Like Triguy said just fit the board into the sides of the bedliner and you're all set.

Want it, want it now.

Don't be so easy on yourself 'cause this one might be all that you have left

Yeah... I'm kind of trying to avoid the home made rack. I think I'm just going to put the fork mounts on the truck bed with some rubber for isolation. I was kind of trying to avoid that though. The Beddy Jo thing is cool but I'm not sure it would fit since I barely have enough room with the shell. Thanks for the input!

tsilcyc I have a shell on my tacoma and ran into the same issue. I have tried several various methods (usually borrowing something from someone else to test), and sadly the homemade 2x4 mount works the best. If you are dead set on doing that then here are a couple of other ideas.

1. Modified Thule rack:
http://www.rei.com/product/670296
This is designed for an open bed as it has upside down L shaped "wings" that get pressed into the side and top of the bed, a simple dremel cut of the top section will leave you with an expandable/removable bike bar that looks like it was meant to be that way.

2. Hanging Rack
Not sure about your cap but my old one had these cross-section beams that were about 8" off the front and back of the bed, I used some of that JB weld stuff and stuck a couple of hooks from the ceiling and the bike was able to just hang off them like if you put them on hooks in the garage (I used some high tensile rope to lash them down and make sure they didn't move around). Please note I am not responsible for any permanent damage you may do to your vehicle doing this lol. My current truck/cap doesn't have those cross members and I'm leary of just JB welding that to the thin carbon fiber or whatever makes up the shell. However this was a great set up in my old truck, lots of versatility and such.

Hope these helped in some way shape or form.

You know my problem first hand since I too have a Tacoma with a shell. I actually have a Thule Bed Rider as well. Hmmm... things to ponder. Thanks!
