Running with the Devil (dog)
I used to run with mine 4 days a week till he blew out his back acl's. Now- after $ surgery $- he only gets to go on a slow run once a week and a walk twice a week. He tends to gimp around and I sure miss him. Nothing like having dog to suddenly chasing a seagull across the street to make me keep running faster!
i wasn't into tri's, or running really when our last dog was around. hiking mostly. coincidentlally she had doggy acl surgery too; although hers was very successful and she went back to chasing squirrels and the moon (story for another time)...a very sweet lab mix...we miss her a lot!
My Border Collie can run longer than I can in cooler weather. Shes not much for the faster (sub 7:30 pace) stuff though. We just ran 2 hours on tuesday. You gotta start em out easy, just like a person, work their way up through time, letting them get in shape. If they show any signs of limping, give them a week or two off. Hot weather isnt a friend of most dogs. I try to run in the morning as much as I can during the summer.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Get them shaved in the summer...for a variety of reasons, but it will help their endurance a lot

My doberman is good up to 4-5 miles. After that he is toast. He's a good sport about it though, all I have to do is mention the word run and he is at the front door waiting.

NEVER shave a long or medium haired dog, unless itsa amedical necessity. It doesnt keep them any cooler, takes away their protective guard hairs, and can results in sun burn and skin conditions. Especially with aussies and border collies.

I run with my austrlian kelpie all the time.hes been out on 3 hour runs with me. I think, like triguy said, you gotta start them out slow just like you would a person. Just make sure they are enjoying themselves and all is well.
I run with our 5yr old austraiian shepard and we've worked up to 1 hr on the trails, he doesn't care much for pavement. I always make sure to carry water for him on the longer runs and he gets a treat and an off leash blast thru the woods at the end--he loves herding squirrels :)
If you run in the woods make sure you're up to date with your flea and tick drops, check their paw pads after the run and give 'em a brush out to get out any burs and debris--only takes a coupla extra minutes.

I don't need to get faster, I just need to get older!
Yes, love running with the pup! I have to carry water for him though after about 10 minutes, starts panting quite a bit, so we share a bottle or two. We did try to run in a snow storm once, well, we were out and it was pretty cold and his paws at first didn't like it, but then it started snowing really hard sideways and he started to freak out, took a little while to calm him down. Still, its like killing two birds with one stone, get the run out of the way for the day, and have a tired dog for the reaminder of the evening so I can relax!
yea pavement isnt all that great on the pads so avoid that. If your dog is trained well and you run trails were there allowed off leash let them go. Its nice to be able to concentrate on the run and the dogs love it. You will notice that dogs find there rythem, just like people.

Which is very believable considering that Kelpies are the real marathoners of the dog world. Seems a long run would be well suited for a breed that was bred to herd around sheep in the outback.
Well I have not been running because of some knee issues, but when I get back to it I'll take my Beauceron... at least on trails he's young so I don't want to mess up his joints by taking him running on the road. Also have a Boerboel but he's doesn't have the endurance or drive. (Boerboels are quite large dogs... :P Mine is around 130 lbs.)

I had to google your dogs - interesting choices. How'd you get into them?

I ran with my dog a few times when I was younger (and had a dog to run with) until we were going pretty fast and the dog decided to run on the opposite side of a phone pole while on the leash. Almost having your arm wrenched from your shoulder tends to put a damper on that, and I don't think she enjoyed almost breaking her neck. She loved running, though. She was a pure-bred mutt ;-)
Otherwise, if I still had a dog I'd totally run with it again :-)

Hehe, well I love dogs, and used to be really reallly into them. I was the kind of dog lover who didn't jus love dogs but I loved researching different breeds and stuff, which is how I found these "rare" breeds. :P The Beauceron is great for an active lifestyle. Mine loves to run and swim and be active. Wherever there's action that's where he wants to be. It's too bad I can't take him cycling with me...
We did it!
Ok - no biggie for most of u, but I've never been much of a runner - until today. Devil and I did our usual 4 mile out and back, and FINALLY ran an 8:30 mile. I double checked the split, in disbelief, and we were cruising on home, on pace to repeat when we had to stop and wait for a train (carrying edible beef tallow, amongst other things).

nice run, devil's a great pacer. i usually carry gels, i find beef tallow to be a little chewy ;)

Gah, I really really want a dog to train with now :D!
i have a new pup, not suposed to run with them to much untill there at least 1 year old.
mines a amstaff and she is in greta shape at 4 mnths already.
db and I ran a 7 mile loop yesterday - but he still looks like a coffee table. that dog's too smart for me. he slows down around mile 3.5, saving his energy to bark at any passing trucks, and to protect me from any evils we might encounter. now I get it - a shepherd's job isn't done until we're home safe.
love running with him, and although it's been discussed, I can't run without him so what should be longer days aren't. it'll do for now.

I was just reading a discussion on a dog list and a person mentioned that she has gone through several canine running partners over 10 years of running and they were mostly APBT's (American Pitbull Terriers) which are pretty similar to Amstaffs. As long as your pup has the drive (and health) she should be a good running partner... but yeah that's good to wait till she's older so her joints don't get messed up. This person found with her APBT's that they don't enjoy running until about 15-18 months old and then something kicks in and they will go forever... She says she has to watch it though with her APBT in the heat because she thinks he'd keep going until he died if she'd let him.
I do all my runs with only a furry training partner as I am one of the few headcases in my area that dares to move outdoors without a motor attached. We have four dogs: two shiloh shepherds, a shepherd husky mix, and my doberman pinscher. I take different dogs for different workouts. The mix is eight, so he's my cool down dog (maxes out at 10min). The shilohs can do long as they can trot all day. Anytime I have speed work or go mountain biking, it's the dobie. I can also use her to run anywhere anytime...If I need to run at nite, I can go through the area were the dope is being sold, and I either clear the area or make an interesting selection of new friends who all love my "killer" dog. We have great conversations and periodically stop in parks to chase crows or drink out of puddles. They will even drink from my waterbottles if I hose it into their mouths (I am not sharing with them for obvious reasons). I have a marathon planned in September and am going to rotate dogs every 10k.
we were running great and now I sustained the first injury of the season tripping over the f-n dog. He really is the devil. Add insult to injury when I'm lying in the street, and he spots the cat that made him cut me off in the first place, and takes off again, spinning me around on the concrete like a top. Nice dog - I used to love him....

I hope you are ok, but that is a funny story.
i'm going to miss a race on account of him, but it really is funny.
can't get into my trusty ortho until the 19th, hopefully i'll be better by then. i'll let you know the damage later.

devil dog update - he's down 4 lbs from the massive 82 that he weighed in at previously, but he's retired since my arm is broken from when i tripped over him. radial head fracture.
who knew dogs were so dangerous :-)

My dog gained so much weight this winter he looks more like a coffee table and less like a sheep dog.
He's working his way up to 4 miles with me - and getting better every week (hopefully I am too).
Do your dogs run with you? How far can they go? How far is too far?
JT Devilbeast is a two year old Aussie, and we run on dirt roads.
