Bee Juice
Honey works great, actually. GU pretty much tries to copy the glucose/fructose ratio to get a good absorbtion rate. There is a brand, honey stingers, I think that sells endurance nutrition that is pretty much honey.
Get a gel flask at the bike store. I just put one in the back of my bike jersey. You can also mount it right on your bike if youwant. That would give you five or so shots and should keep you from getting too sticky.
The only drawback for me is that it is quite a bit sweeter than maltodextrin. I know that might sound strange to anyone who knows what kind of a sweet tooth I have, but sometimes it gives me this weird itch in my throat because it is so sweet.

Geez, is honey really that much cheaper? I always found honey was pretty expensive at the local grocery store.

Psst: Whataburger has small honey packets. Starbucks has honey straws. For "free".

Yeah I would like the recipe too... if you don't mind. :)

It's definitely cheaper than GU. I know Hammer's not the only brand, but their 26 oz jug is $18.95. There might be others that are cheaper, but I'm sure none of them are cheaper than honey.

For individual packets, gels are, at best, $1 per oz. You can get a big jar of honey for $3-4.

Because I am cheap, I wanted to try using honey instead of gels/bars for energy. It tastes good and is calorie dense. I would get electrolytes from liquids.
Has anyone tried it?
Anyone have a creative way of carrying it? I have a fuel belt, but can't imagine when I would need a bottle's worth. I would prefer a way to just put 2-3 "whatevers" of honey in my pocket and head out the door. Something reusable would be nice.
