So.... I have just recently found out that I am pregnant with my first child. Yea! Kinda puts the damper on IMC 2008 now, BUT... what are the odds of delivering in December and then doing IMC 2009 in August?

Has anyone done this before? I do realize it takes a while for the body to get back to "normal" and that takes about 6 weeks (if I remember correctly from my friends). Is it possible/smart/stupid/optimistic/unlikely that I could do this?

I'd love to hear everyone's come back stories coming back from pregnancy to triathlon.

I don't see how having a baby puts a damper on anything, lol. Congrats

Congratulations and all the best Toni! Well, my kids are teens now, so I wasn't doing any triathlons when they were born (don't think I even heard of them yet!), but I was running, playing ball and had a great career going when I found I was pregnant for the first time (I have 3 kids). I remember reassuring my boss, that "don't worry, I'll still be able to travel/work the hours/give up weekends/blah, blah, blah". He just laughed and told me I was nuts and he was right. Anyway, you cannot believe how much your life is going to change. Fitness-wise, you'll probably bounce right back, but I guess my advise would be to set REALISTIC goals so you're not disappointed. Can you give birth in December and race in August - maybe - but you'll need a really fantastic support team at home. Training for an IM is a huge committment on it's own, but a baby is even more so -- oh and those sleepless nights!!! Anyway, take it as it comes, see how you're feeling throughout your pregnancy and see how it goes. I wish you all the best, this is definitely an exciting time in your life, enjoy the ride!

Congrats and all the sweet stuff :) So, now that you have a child, are you getting one of those 'jogging' strollers and rickshaw-looking things for your bike? I would. They look cool and I imagine they would help the training and provide you with time to be with your kid. I see the little buggies on bikes all the time at t-shirt bike rallies. The kid is usually bundled up in the back, snoozing away, while the mom/dad trudges up a hill. And are you going to run with him/her across the finish line at IMC? (Please say no.)

Congratulations Toni! That's great!

Find out as much as you can for now, but remember to listen to your body. I imagine you will be pretty beat and exercise early on may be more of a psychological break from mommying than a valuable training effort.

Congrats!

Can't offer any advice, but there have been a few threads about that in 'The Womens' on the other site.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone! We just told the parents yesterday and the mom's were screaming with joy! :D

Ant - Thanks for the reality check. That makes sense. I'll probably have to put it off for a few years. But I'm gonna do IMC one day. I've a got a great support person at home. He's the best!

Still waiting to hear back from the powers-that-be about transferring the race fee to next year or getting a refund.

Kylie - Thanks for the blogs. I'll have to check them out.

Trisooner - I'm definitely going to have one of those jogging strollers. Perhaps the one made by Ironman.... And I will also be riding with a baby trailer. Good resistence training... ;)

TriAC - what's a burley? We have a feeling it's going to be a boy because all of the Wolcott's have been boys. So a burley might be a good fit.... :)

Toni-

I hope I didn't come off too negative, but I remember when I was pregnant with my first, I didn't think things were going to change all that much - what's the big deal right? Well I was in for a surprise. When your baby is born, everything is different and all your priorities take a back seat, but it is the best time of your life so enjoy it.

Feel good and keep us posted.........

CONGRATS TO YOU TONI!
The joy of having a child, mine was unexpected however. Cheyenne was born while I was still going to college and I was 20 when I had her. I was invovled in soccer and track so I was in decent shape. I found out 5 months into my pregnacy with nothing to show. My times were slower only b/c I thought I was getting the flu that everyone else was getting. Anyways, I ran my last outdoor race and after a month I was huge. I was invloved with horses at the time and was out at the barn all day b/c I couldn't stay inside. I groomed, took our trail rides, taught..stayed active as much as possible. Didn't lift anything which was nice b.c I got the kids to do alot. I then delievered and all went well and still had the top potion of abs which was awesome. I then was cleared and 3 weeks after having Cheyenne I was out on the soccer field playing and focusing on getting back into shape. Now, I didn't have my daughter with me as you will due to having some awesome freakin' parents who helped me out more than I will ever need so I had the opp. to get back into what I wanted to be. I ate decent (besides craving of sloppy burgers and slurpies) but for the most part decent. I also staye dactive as much as I could with the occasional/frequent naps. SLEEP WHEN YOU CAN! (LOL)

So, all in all I got back into shape w/ determination. Now I have my daughter involved on biking with me, I want to get her into turkey trot race this year and she is my little helper when I need to get things packed or to help clean my bike.

I wish you the best.

a burley is a brand of trailer
this is the one we have: http://www.burley.com/products/child/solo.cfm

(btw, joggers & trailers are not really recommended until the tots are sitting up on their own and in full control of their heads. that being said, I've got plenty of friends who packed stuffed animals around their kids so they wouldn't get bumped around)

TriAC - that's awesome! You don't think you'll need it in case you have another bebe? If not, I would love to have it. Let me know what you'd part with it for.

Zcowgirl - thanks for the info. Glad you had such a supportive family. It's funny, but I don't even want to workout right now. Just nap. Work, nap, eat, sleep. :) I'm gonna have to force myself to get out there soon though.

Ant - you definitely didn't come off negative. Just realistic. All in all, it's going to just depend on how I feel afterwards. I may not even be interested in tri for a while.

toni- first congrats. it's the most amazing thing ever.

i skied and snowboarded, rode my horse, etc until 5 mos, then something happened, and I grew like a gosh-darned balloon. I stuck to walking then, and what ever was comfortable. And at 8 mos I was determined to clear 7 feet of snow off my 800 ft long driveway. That didn't go over so well (bad case of cabin fever).

my first and only birth experience was borderline disaster. but I was up and about in 2 weeks and within 3 months, I was summiting Colorado peaks with the peanut in a baby bjorn. As she grew, we got the BOB stroller, and stuck to roads and trails that could accomodate the stroller. You have an advantage when you are fit, and can recover fast (had I not been at the level I was at, I probably wouldn't be sittin' here now). Relish the moments and don't worry.

ps- the BOB we don't need anymore, either...if you want it.

Don't be so easy on yourself 'cause this one might be all that you have left

Congrats Toni!

I just had my first kiddo in November. I'm still trying to get back in a routine but it is doable! I did my first run at 5 weeks post partum, which dr was okay with, but after about 10 minutes on the treadmill I had to call it quits, not because I didn't have the endurance or couldn't breath or anything, but because my bladder felt like it was going to fall out. That's been the biggest shock for me. Now that my little guy is 4 1/2 months old it doens't happen that much anymore but sometimes does if I drink a lot of water right before a run.

I also read in a recent article that it takes a woman's body about 4 months to get right if you will after having a baby because your ligaments and muscles are out of sorts and so not to over do it.

I do have a BOB jogging stroller and it's nice and I did a 5k with the kiddo yesterday where I just walked but he was none too happy towards the end, the don't have the patience that it takes to stay in one place for that long of a period yet.

Oh, and one other thing, if you're planning on breastfeeding that adds a whole new element of fun to working out as well. Not trying to discourage you from that at all, just be prepared. When I run it's funny because I'm always worried about leaking either with bladder issues for from my chest! My chest is just feeling back to normal now and I always have to plan my runs around when I nurse my little guy and try to go right after I do so that I'm not carrying around all of the extra weight in them! It's totally worth it to me but just difficult sometimes!

But best of luck and if you have any questions please feel free to email/PM.
