Since there are no stupid questions (I think I read that here once...) I'll let this one fly: All this talk about aggressive drivers got me wondering, does anyone use a mirror when cycling? There was an article in Bicycling a month or 2 ago about people being hit from behind by cars, and in the author's best attempt to blame the riders, suggested that if they had been using a mirror (e.g. one that attaches to your helmet or glasses) they might have seen the cars coming behind them and could have possibly gotten out of the way. Anyone use these things?

I personally do not, but I've seen plenty of people using them. My dad just recently got a helmet one tho

as i told a bus driver when he suggested i get a mirror after cutting me off, a mirror doesn't protect me from poor decision-making by other drivers

i was pissed, of course, and i wasn't about to admit that any extra awareness helps bikers drive as defensively as possible.

so, no, i don't, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't

I don't either. Not really sure that it wouldn't be more distracting than helpful.

I do not. Unless you are constantly monitoring the darn thing, I dont see how they would help. There are very few straight on rear impacts. Better to be more aware of the thing happening in front of you, things you can be more proactive in avoiding. My rear view mirror are my ears. Listen for cars coming from behind, and pay attention when they do. Thats pretty simple.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I don't use one, but it seems like mirrors would help in general awareness, not just avoiding being rear ended. Whenever you look over your shoulder you are obviously taking your eyes off the road which can cause problems. To compound that, many cyclists (especially new ones) have trouble keeping a straight line when they turn to look backward. A mirror would allow you to see whats going on behind you in a split second, which would be nice. Then again, I do think it would be distracting and probably not worthwhile IMO
