here you are!
max, I have the same problem. My youth was spent as a sprinter but now that I'm almost 40, I go for distance. I have had incredible pain that quickly subsides when I stop. Clearly, you've got the stretching thing down and that was my first "solution" to my painful calfs. The second solution was shoes. Turns out I can't buy the nikes on sale at the department store any more. I spent a long time trying to find shoes. Turns out, the right shoes go a long way to help my calfs.
The other thing that I struggle with is stride. I always want to go back to the sprinters gait and really push off. Check your stride, make sure you're staying centered and not getting too far out front. Runner's World has some good articles on stride (coolrunning too).
Hope this helps!
Good luck
randaln,
what was it about the shoes that helped? i suspect in my own case it might have alot to do with overpronation as i have a high instep... plus, i can really feel the pain down deep when i stretch and emphasize my weight on the inside of my foot.
What about those compression socks that cover the calf? I never wore them, but they seem to have become fairly popular lately.
If it were me, I'd take it easy this week and stretch the ever-living crap out of that calf and take an easy run the day before to check it out and race no matter what. Then afterwards see what you can do about shoes and other options. Also think about getting a massage done on that leg.
thanks. i think i will do all of the suggested, i will stay off the run and just swim and bike. in the mean time i am gonna break down and find real running store in my area.
i wonder if those compression socks can be had with "enhancement", that make it appear as if i have nice claves under there!?
I was fortunate enough to find a store with video "gait analysis".
After they sold me my shoes, I went to their website to check them out as I had never bought Brooks Running shoes. They have this step by step "shoe advisor". It would have suggested the same shoe to me.

Hope this helps. I'm sure other companies may do the same.
Sorry for the delay but the shoes didn't have enough support and I tended to overpronate. It was interesting because it had such an acute onset-ran for years in cheap shoes and never had any problems. Then one day, it started and it wasn't until I got a new pair shoes the problem went away. Also, I put about 1000 miles on my shoes. This was before I learned shoes were only good to 4-500 miles.
Good Luck!
randaln,
i checked out the brooks site and but wasn't sure about my pronation/overpronation. so i ran through several possible scenarios hoping one or two shoe models would come up for different types. i believe that all i need to do is have a quick video made of me running and will be able to decide between two pairs... unless i find free time enough to journey to my closest real running store... thanks. it

Max, I would highly recommend that you take the time to go to a reputable running shoe store. Those guys can tell you what kind of shoe you need based on the wear of your current shoe. I just bought a new pair of Mizuno Inspires today which I have finally honed in to be the best shoe for my gait/pronation, etc... The gal that helped me was amazed at how evenly my current shoes were wearing considering they have 500+ miles on them and when I compare them to the older shoes that I have, it is quite amazing. My older shoes tended to wear towards the inside of the heals. Anyway, thats alot of words for strongly recommending you go to the professionals
Pain is the sensation of weakness leaving the body!

i've been checking the site now and then and never an update. figured everyone was training... 2007, every post 2007. i happened upon a link to the NEW site duh. double DUH.
so now that i found you all i am having a calf issue during run. trouble is i have signed up for my first race one week from this saturday an no matter what you say, no matter that it is a C race for me, i AM going. heres the question. no first the problem. on "almost" every run i get pretty intense pain in the soleus muscle below my left calf. it feels alot like a cramp. i have run after intense long term stretching and i can usually complete my runs without a problem but of course there is no time in t2 for long stretching routines. i thought that if it were warm from the bike all would be fine but doing bricks has me hobbling.
so, i dont know if i should run short lengths in an attempt to toughen it up like daily or should i rest until the race and just go with what i got?
