I'm sorry, I couldn't resist posting this.

Didn't Katie Holmes run the NYC marathon last year?

We're being invaded.

haha, invasion
good for her, I just hope she trains right
I saw a katie holmes interview after the marathon and she was bragging about how she had only trained for a month and a half. That is what really bugs me, I think that is very irresponsible.

Yeah, you'll love this then...

Katie took nearly 5-1/2hrs to run NYC....yet she'll be at the starting line of the Boston Marathon next month. Gotta love those charity/celebrity slots!

Great. Most people already think "triathlon" and "Ironman" are one in the same. So some couch potato struggles through a pool Sprint and suddenly they are a "triathlete." Now J-Lo? Call me when she finishes a full. But if she were in the same race I was in (doubt it), she would be one more person I'd place in front of. And anyone who posts here would also be in front of her too.

She (katie) took nearly 5 1/2 hours. I have walked great portions of marathons and finished faster than that. She also broke the "no headphone" rule they had this year. Guess she thinks she is special.

P.S Do any of you REALLY care if she (Jennifer Lopez) does it? Y'all have more dedication in your big toe than she does. Not like she is going to go out and make it a lifestyle :)

Geez folks, I don't know... Everyday new folks drop in here and we give them all kinds of encouragement and help. Are we scoffing at them secretly because THEY are new?
If she wants in...more power to her.
Power and money and celebrity buys alot. If ya want to get uppity about something get uppity about the rich/power/celebrity slots that appear every year at the IM "World Championships" in Kona.

I concur with Anton. If she gets a free slot at Kona that one thing, but if a women who just gave birth to twins want to train and complete a triathlon, why not? Does it matter if she's a celebrity?

Is there a concern that swimmers might circle around her and head back to shore?

C'mon --- yup someone trains for and finishes a triathlon - whatever distance - well then they are a triathlete. They are worlds ahead of those that stay on the couch.
There are people out there that think that only those that finish Kona - have the right to call themselves an Ironman.
We need not to be elitist.

I have always thought that there are currently Triathletes that compete in races just because it's not an every day thing. Don't get me wrong..... I know there are like a thousand reasons why a person might be into this sport but I believe there is a group that wouldn't find it as much fun to compete if every neighbour they have would do it to.

I'm with Anton and Tribro, I apreciated in my first Tri all the friendly Triathletes that encouraged me to participate and to keep going when I was in pain during the race. Luckly i didn't find people that discriminated me because of being short, being an actor etc. I think we have to be open.

Are you a Triathlete because YOU enjoy it or because it makes you look good?
If YOU enjoy it....don't worry about what other people do. LIVE AND LET LIVE!!!!!

Now...being a public person and encouraging people (trough declarations) to enter a Marathon, IM or any other endurance event without proper training is irresponsable.

Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)

I wonder if she needs a training partner? I'm sure my wife won't mind.

I thought Alexandra Paul of Baywatch was credible when she finished the Kona IM. I mean the girl really can swim.

Just like every other participant, she will get out of it what she puts in. Her performance will be representative of her natural ability and the time and effort she put into training.

If JLo or other celebrities being involved in healthy activities like this can cause just a few people to resist sliding into the unhealthy lifestyles so prevalent especially in the US, I'm all for it.

I think part of the resistance from "normal" (ahem) people is this: someone like Katie Holmes can train for a marathon without worrying about fitting in a full-time job, keeping groceries in the house, getting dinner on the table, keeping vehicles inspected, making sure bills get paid, keeping the house from looking like redneck central, or figuring out what she should be doing and motivating day after day. They have nannies, trainers, maids, handymen, secretaries, etc. Two women from our local running shop ran that race. They called the shop owner (who gives substantially of his time to the local running scene) and said nothing more than: "We beat Katie!"

when katie started dating tom and after he did the jumping on the couch thing on oprah, some website started selling shirts that said......."RUN, KATIE RUN"

Good point M. It's better than what Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan are doing.

I have been absent from the forum for a LOT of time but it's great to be back and as always we have Anton distilling words of wisdom here. My opinion on the matter matches his.

Me too. I work too much and have too many kids to even think about training for a full at this time in my life.

Still, I say good for me for trying and good for her for trying.
I kind of doubt that she has a dedication problem. Even though I'm not a huge fan, I don't think she gets to her level of success by coasting.

I hope J-Lo goes out there and kicks trash.

I got into tri to get in shape and reverse years of not giving a crap. My first race was an experience that I will never forget. If someone else wants to share in that, celeb or not, good on them. Just remember that once the gun goes off, no amount of fame or cash is going to finish the race for you.
