Drinking on the Run

OK, this is probably going to sound strange, but is there a proper or preferred method for taking in fluids while on the run? When I try to drink (no matter what amount) while running, my breathing rthym gets all screwed up which affects my pace and mental outlook on the remainder of my run. This doesn't seem to be a big deal on the bike only on the run.

Any tips or tricks would be appreciated!

you could stop and swallow instead of running while trying to swallow ; -)

I usually drink after the exhale in short swallows, it also keeps you from over drinking becuase if you stop and guzzle like you want to you can overdo it

It is better to hurt from doing something than from doing nothing...

What do you drink out of? How much at a time?

I use a Nathan Belt with bottles, and have found they are great for sipping from. I prefer to sip frequently rather than take larger amounts of fluid. If you are talking about during a race, the biggest tip I have is to grab the cup and squeeze the sides togther to narrow the opening that you are trying to drink out of.

This question has many different answers depending if you are talking about racing or training and what length you are talking about. For a sprint race, I usually get any fluids I am going to need on the bike and avoid the stations on the run. For an Olympic, I will do what psychosyd is talking about and squeeze the cup together while running and try to drink. For a Half or longer, I will take my time and walk through the aid stations because I think staying adequately hydrated in these races is much more important than the small amount of time lost walking through an aid station.

If you are talking about training runs, just stop and drink and then get going again.

I breathe through my nose, hold my breath, and drink one/two gulps, and exhale. Repeat. You'll also see people fill their mouth with the water, breathe through their nose while the water is in their mouth, and swallow just a bit at a time. Basically, it just takes practice and depends on your exertion levels.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am referring to racing, so it is generally the little paper or plastic cups. I have only done sprints, but plan on doing an Oly this year and past experience with Road racing triggered my curiousity how people handle their fluid intake on the run - during a race.

When I was road racing I would usually just grab the cup, swing my arm up towards my face, and throw whatever fluid was in it towards my awaiting open mouth. I'd settle with drinking whatever managed to go in. But I never raced over 10k so fluid intake was never that important.

Oh, make sure you are either wearing sunglasses or close your eyes before it hits you in the face. Gatorade in the eyes is not pleasant.

This is basically what I do. But I think that I drink while I am exhaling rather than holding my breath... basically the trick is to figure out where to do the swallowing so that is doesn't interrupt your breathing pattern.

You can practice this on a treadmill or the track by running repeats with your mouth full of water. It helps you control the liquid in your mouth, and get used to breathing through your nose without swallowing. Then you can practice by holding water in your mouth, and swallowing a bit at a time.... like take a mouthful, and try to swallow 1/4 every 100yds.

This might seem like a bit of overkill for something as simple as drinking, but if you're having a hard time with it.... well, practice makes perfect.

I used to toss it down the hatch until one time I choked. Now I have a fear of drinking when out of breath. The fear has forced me to do what others have posted... get the liquid in your mouth first, and then swallow a little at a time while running.

Anything over a 10k and I'll walk the water stations to cut down on the bouncing from running.
