Hey ya’ll, I have been training for sprint distance for about 2 months now. I am getting a little antsy; I really wanted to know if I could do it. So, I held a sprint dist tri for myself.
I have been fighting off a cough for about a week, it did not seem to effect me until the run.
I am hoping to race in my first “real” tri in August in the South Beach Nautica Tri.
The distance for the south beach tri is slightly longer than a regular sprint, swim 805m, bike 18mi, and run 4mi. Here is a break down of my attempt of a sprint tri.
Any comments, or suggestions are welcome.

Swim- 750m- time- 8:39, swam in my L.A. fitness pool.

T1- time- 6:66, I don’t have tri shorts yet, so I had to change out of my jammers, then put my stuff in my car, then start biking. This will get faster in the real race.

Bike- 12.4mi-time- 43.05, avg. sp. 18.10mph. This was done on a MTB. It was very windy, if its not I can post a much better time.

T2- 5.21- this time includes running .2mi to the start of my normal 5k course.

Run- 3.1mi- 27.09- This is my weakest point in the tri. (other than the MTB) I had a bad cramp at about mile 2, which is very unusual for me. This forced me to walk for about a minute. I used to run my bricks on a treadmill, but I will change that.

Total time- 1:30:00

Polar- Hr max 186 (94%), avg. 170 (86%)

After I was done I felt good. I have to muscle soreness, or joint pain. I think that I can finish the longer distance of the south beach tri. I train well above those distances for the swim, and the bike. I currently only run a total of 10 -11 miles a week. I will have to increase my running distance in order to perform well.

Thanks for any help, Mike

All I'll say is that I'm embarrassed of my swim time after seeing yours!

Sounds to me like you're on track... If you're going distances longer than the race in training, I think that you are right in thinking that you can tackle the distances of the race. It seems like this little race simulation gave you a pretty nice confidence boost about the distances.

Stick with the training plan, and you should be in perfect shape for the race.

Are you sure about the length of the pool you are using? That swim time is much much better than your bike and run times. If you were a swimmer in high school or college ignore this post, but your previous post leads me to believe that is not the case. I don't mean to sound overly skeptical, but 69 seconds per 100m is pretty damn fast, so maybe you are swimming in a 25m pool and you think it is 50m?

swim: .46 miles in 8:39 is 3.19MPH or a pace of 18:45
bike: 12.4 miles in 43:05 is 17.27MPH or a pace of 3:28
run: 3.1 miles in 27:09 is 6.85MPH or a pace of 8:45

The swim seems FAST, the bike seems pretty darn good considering it's a mountain bike and I"m assuming it has fat tires. The run seems on par. If those are your times then you'll do very well. Just get a road or tri bike and work on that run time.

The swim time seems pretty fast. Is it a 25 yard pool or 25 meter pool?

I would consider putting some road tires on your mountain bike. I did my first season this way and was able to go from 19 mph with fat tires to 20.5 mph.

EvoMike,

check the distance of your swim or your time. For example, in a sprint I did last year, the Pros were coming out of the water in about 7:30 (give or take 30 seconds) and that was for 500M. Not that it should disuade you, but it would be helpful to know for training purposes.
