GPS watch suggestion for runner
I use the forerunner 305 just for running and really like it. I only use it for running because I already have the edge 205 on my bike. I think its a great tool for logging and analyzing your runs on the computer with the garmin program. I suppose it depends how serious he wants to be but it is great. I wish I wouldve waited a couple months though, because after I bought mine the smaller and supposedly better forerunner 405 came out. Anways, thumbs up on the 305, and you already know this because of the amount of people and reviews it has here on trifuel.

I was in Target yesterday and saw a low-frills Garmin for less than $100. I have the pre-HRM generation and I love it.

I'm still happily using my Forerunner 301. Does he want HR with it? If not, the 201 might work. Does he want to upload data to his computer, or be able to process it? If not, the 101 might work.

I don't use all the features of my 305 all the time, but it's so easy to log all your HRM, pace, course, then it's there if I want to go back and look at it. I'm lazy, so it's nice that I can just strap it on before each run, and it becomes my training log.
I know the 305 might be a little steep, but now with the new ones coming out, it's not a ton more than the 101/201/205/301, and the added features are totally worth it. A big decider is what he wants to get from it, like Kylie mentioned. If all he wants is speed and what not, the Timex might be the way to go. If he wants any kind of upload feature or HR, I would say hold out for a good deal on a 305 or look for one used.

I really like my Timex Bodylink. Has held up for over 2 years now- no leaks.
I use the 205... It's basically the 305 without HRM... The 201 is also basically the same, i think, with a little different display. IMO, neither of them are very comfortable to wear which is why I have mostly abandoned it in favor of a regular Nike watch and planning things out in gmaps-pedometer before I run.

I got a Timex Speed Distance Ironman (gps recever) no heartrate, sent to me with postage for under $77. I could not pass it up and it works fine as long as I am away from skyscrapers. Got it at CAMPMOR. Suggested retail on box $200
I'm selling a timex bodylink version that works really well for running. (I recently bought the Garmin Forerunner 305 for running/cycling.) The timex doesn't have a cycling setting but the watch is waterproof whereas the Garmin is not. The timex can also be pared up with the Timex heart rate strap for heart rate. Then your workout can be downloaded to your computer (with extra software and date recorder)

A buddy of mine is looking to get a GPS type watch which he will use just for running. Does anyone have any suggestions that would be different than the 305. He doesn't really care to much about getting the latest and greatest, he just wants something that works. I was going to help him do some research, but I was hoping some of you might have some suggestions. The reason I am thinking about not getting the 305 is that it seems like overkill if he is just going to be using it for running.
