Has anyone had the experience of an RHR that is up day after day even after rest. I am an on/off triathlete. I typically train solid for about 6 months and then swing back to family and work. I started training again in February after about 7 months off. Most years including last year, my RHR is 42-44. This year I've seen 51-54 most of the time. I had a cold but it's been gone for weeks. My training is only 3 days a week now with easy short workouts. Sleeping about 8 hours a night with no changes in stress level. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Two likely contributors.

1. Reversibility - detraining effects from the 7months off. It will take time to get your RHR and level of fitness back to the levels you were at before taking a breather.
2. Overtraining - trying too much too/too much intensity too soon to achieve the previous level of fitness.

Hydration could also be a factor .
More than likely a combination of the three.

Don't get discouraged, keep at it, have a plan and the fitness will return.
