New Member Profile Fields

O.K. Gang I just added some new custom fields to our profiles. As we begin to grow I thought these might help us find training partners, ride share, and racing buddies. Basically they are drop down fields that will allow easier, more reliable searches in the member search functionality I just enabled.

http://www.trifuel.com/forums/memberlist.php?do=search

The new fields are:
1. Nearest Metro - I added a long list of major cities around the country a world. This will allow you to more easily find other members in SF Bay Area or London, without having to know that San Ramon is in the SF Bay Area. Location field is now called Hometown and will be used as is for narrowing down where people are and if they're in close proximity to you.

These next fields are too bring a little clarity and refinement to the "Skill Level" field. We'll still use that one for overall triathlete skill level, but I've added new fields to establish skill level in each discipline as well as the race distance you're focusing on. So...

2. I created a set of Endurance Level drop downs - Swim EL, Bike EL, Run EL. The old Skill level is just a fill in field so what people enter can vary. As well it is an overall Triathlete skill level. These new Fields are geared toward each discipline so you can find training partners or buddies with similar strengths and weaknesses. I changed it to Endurance Level instead of Skill because I believe it's more appropriate for us. You could be an excellent bike handler, or run sprinter but maybe not so good on the long endurance stuff.
The numbers should be based on your percentile ranking among your age group competitors in your Primary Distance of Focus. 10=top percentile, 1=bottom percentile. Most races will give you your ranking in each discipline for AG and Overall.

3. Which creates the need to determine what distances you're training for. So, Primary Distance of Focus will help you find others with similar goals and quantify the EL numbers above.

So, as you can see on my profile to the left I have Endurance Level: 4,7,6 (swim, bike, run) for someone focused on Olympic Distance. You can change and update these as your training progresses over the months and years.

All these are meant to hopefully give you better access to other members with similar goals, in your area, etc. to make your triathlon experience a better one.

I've also created one other checkbox field for if you have a trifuel blog (on http://www.triathlonlife.com), if you click yes a link to it will show up under you profile in your posts. As will the new fields above.

You can edit your profiles in your User CP, or follow this link:

Please give me any feedback you may have - thanks

It might be something to do with my Clydesdale status.
Ever seen any Ethiopian marathoners built like defensive tackles?

But I'm workin' on it. I'll be a svelte 210 lbs by Aug 28th. ;)

Again thanks for looking out for us here in our "Triathlete Planet" known as trifuel :D

o.k. an update on the new fields, some interesting numbers here (for you stat guys)

*note: some of these fields are fairly new so not all members have updated their profiles. As well, some of the earlier fields were fill in type so some entries aren't counted. anyway...

As well, while we have some representation from the veteran age-groups (5 men in the 55-59 cat), we clearly need some wisdom added to the mix, so all those men and women under 40 up there, lets get the folks out on the courses - I gaurantee they'll love it and may come hunting for you at the next race!

Hey tribro-

Thanks for all you do...... I'm in the W45-49 AG and am always on the lookout for other women in my group that are still "racing". We're already a small %, and the older we get, the more our ranks shrink. Hopefully I can find some other "old ladies" out there to share war stories and tips with.

Thanks again - Ant ;)

no problem, i enjoy working on this stuff...

not sure why the women aren't as active in the sport later on as the men seem to be. Our numbers shrink as well but I'm curious if the numbers are smaller because the sport is still relatively new, at least from a more mainstream sports appeal. In 20 years I think a my age group (55 then) will be much larger than today just because those of us who started this lifestyle 5-10 years ago will pretty much stick with it.

I wonder what it would take to get more "old ladies" involved. I think there is a misperception amongst many of them that this a sport for the youth, which is far from the truth if you've been to an Ironman event. My youth couldn't touch some of the ladies and men of all shapes and sizes crossing that finish line.

I wonder if there is the same diminishing in numbers in 10k or Marathon participation? If so, maybe is has more to do with inactivity/time constrainsts during the raising of kids/juggling work period?

Anyway, I know you're aspiring for that age group slot in Kona. Here's a breakdonw of the competition:
http://vnews.ironmanlive.com/vnews/topstories/1112897414 They'll cover 45+ AG's next week to give you an idea of your competition :)

Tribro-

Thanks for the article. It's great to see women posting some great numbers - I'm looking forward to the next article so I know how hard I have to train to get to Kona ;)

I have lots of athletic friends and I'm always actively trying to recruit them, but I'm as stumped as you are. I don't know why there is so much aprehension - most of these people are very competitive and will usually try any new sport. And yes our numbers are also small in 5K's and 10K's (the smaller local races anyway). My endurance numbers on the profile probably aren't right on the mark because I normally do well in these races because of the small numbers in my age group.

Anyway, I'd like to hear from some women my age (I know you're out there) and I'm going to keep talking up the sport - sooner or later I'll convince someone :D
