Fighting the cold season...

I have a few questions regarding what everyone does in order to avoid these nasty sinus infections, and head colds...

-How much Vitamin C do you consume on a daily basis?
-With all sorts of antioxidant remedies, what do you use?
-Do you still train through head colds?

I am a big baby when it comes to being sick. I take upwards of 4000mg of Vitamin C/day, but typically hover right above 2000mg. I used to use Monavie for an antioxidant drink, but the stuff is expensive!! :)

Thanks everyone!

Working in the school system , I get colds several times a year.
General rule of thumb that has worked for me for years:
'In the head, go ahead. In the chest, take a rest." I will cut back intensity a bit and if I feel really crappy....I'll stay in and watch movies.
I don't supplement with Vitamin C outside of my daily vitamin. I take echinacea as soon as symptoms pop up and suck on Zinc drops. That seems to help. Drink plenty of fluids. Get lots of rest.

I'm not going to comment on supplements since I could start a holy war. As far as sickness is concerned, I follow this simple rule:

Neck up, keep training. Neck down, stop training. Of course, I've been known to ignore that rule but it's a good rule none the less.

My coach always told me that if you're sick - head up or neck down - it's best to lay off for a day or so, but if you must work out, the head up neck down rule that *tsilcyc* just suggested is pretty much the norm as far as I've heard.

Try to also regularly consume more antioxidants in whole foods rather than looking for extra supplements on occasion. By the time you feel sick it's usually too late to do a whole lot about it. Quinoa is this super grain, if you haven't tried it, and is an excellent source of antioxidants that can be made into almost anything. Foods like this as well as those high in zinc (like chicken) will also boost the immune system if consumed regularly, and help you stay healthy.

Mucinex for anything in the chest
Mucinex D if you need the decongestant.

I've found this product really speeds the recovery time. I seem to get 2 or 3 sinus infections a year.
I can appreciate all the "eat well" suggestions but I'm like you. I want to be rid of it ASAP, this does the trick.

As for prevention, I seem to have pollen allergies. So I buy generic Claritin 24 hour and I take it year round. 12 cents a pill and it's worth it.

Zicam / Zinc is something I use if I feel like something is up.

As far as prevention goes... I take 2000mg of Vit. C on a daily basis, and if I've been in public places/with lots of people then I take more. The possibility also gives me the motivation to not eat deserts (sugary things lower your immune system. which it's better to stay away from deserts anyways.) I also take multi-vitamin, acidophilus thing (I'm on chronic anti-biotics... acne...), and a zinc thing that has slippery elm and I think echinacea in it. I also take Juice Plus. Just telling you what I do. Quite frankly I think the most important is watching your diet, taking Vit. C, and multi-vitamin probably helps too.

why would you even need to take vitamin c in pill form? its the easiest vitamin to get, i get about 1000% a day just eating regular food, everyday i have a couple of oranges, strawberries, blueberries, broccoli, 1/4 of a cantalope, there is no evidence that taking antioxidants in supplements does anything at all for you

I do pretty well with my regular multi-vitamin, but when something starts spreading around the office I add 2000mg vitamin C and like 200% zinc (I forget the mg).

My girlfriend is prone to catching any cold that wanders by and gets ear infections and this combo seems to work well for her (when I can get her to take them!)

Bike and Run will really help clean a head and/or chest out. Today was the first day after a nasty flu for me and after an hour on the bike both my head and chest feel great. I think I snot rocketed or coughed out about 15 ounces of gunk. The best expectorant/decongestant is exercise.

I need a lot immune system support especially after how much I put my body through over a period of time. When looking for world-class athletes were using to overcome the challenge of health, as they push through tough training schedules, high-stress competitions, and grueling overseas travel throughout the year, I found a lot of them using something called NutriFeron™. It has an exclusive, proprietary blend of interferon-boosting plant extracts (natural plant extracts from pumpkin seeds, safflower flowers, plantago seeds, and Japanese honeysuckle flower buds, which have been clinically proven to support and stimulate the natural immune response process at the cellular level). It is hard to find because Shaklee has the world patent on this stuff - I get mine here: http://www.shaklee.net/healththatworks/prodNuFeronHome

If you really like vitamin C products, you would be interested in their Shaklee Sustained Release Vita-C. It was the first product ever to offer a natural sustained release vitamin C, using a proprietary, all-natural delivery system that releases the vitamin C equivalent of eating 1 & 1/2 oranges every hour for over 5 hours. You can find that here: http://www.shaklee.net/healththatworks/product/20095

My wife uses CitriBoost. It provides 100% of the Daily Value of essential vitamins and nutrients, including A, C, D, B6, B12, E, and more! It also provides inulin (a prebiotic) and Lactobacillus acidophilus (a probiotic), delivering friendly microflora to promote gastrointestinal and long term colon health and a healthy immune system. She goes here for hers: http://www.shaklee.net/healththatworks/product/20635

I know there is a lot here. Sorry about that, but don't take my word for it - check out these other people who use: http://www.shaklee.net/healththatworks/team_index

"*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease." Standard disclaimer.

They haven't been clinically proven to do anything. Most of the trials were uncontrolled, few involved a control group, the highlighted study was open-label, and the greatest number of subjects enrolled in any trial was something like 42. All studies cited were conducted by the "Center for Immune Research," which was founded by the Shaklee Corporation. If this has clinically significent effects on interferon and therefore the immune system, suspicion and caution are warranted. At the very least, you risk chronic separation from your money.

I'm in the eat well + sleep well camp for avoiding illness, and I accept the fact that we all come down with stuff once in a while (hopefully not in time for race day, though!). --M
