Mr. diva mom was kind enough to get me an ipod, so I can have tunes to train with. keeps me out of my head when i'm running. so, I downloaded itunes, and came to the shocking realization (like my daughter could have told me this)....I'm way out of touch. I have no idea who any of these grammy-winning pop stars are. Not sure I want to know either...but that begs the question - what's your favorite song to run too?

Daft Punk. it's electronica and it's awesome. Their "Alive 2007" CD has some great running songs on it. There is also a band called Powerspace, which is rather unknown, but I like a lot of their songs for running too. (Check out- Prologue: Adam Beckett and Snap Bracelet.)

Anything by Linkin Park...I love angry music when I'm running. I also love Poison and Guns N Roses. When I'm cooling down I always listen to Pray for You by Sarah Evans.

First of all, consider yourself lucky that you haven't heard of any of the Grammy winning artists. They mostly suck.

Here is the loud, hard music that I love:
AFI
Thrice
Taking Back Sunday
7 Seconds
H2O
Thursday
etc.

I also love Explosions in the Sky (instrumental indie music from Friday Night Lights) and Andy Mckee (Instrumental guitar music that will blow your socks off). Check out this vid and tell me he's not amazing.

Also, check out the following thread. It's mostly for fast-paced, running music, but you might get some good ideas.

Andy Mckee is incredible. Not exactly music to run with, but very good to chill out. Then again I don't run to music so I will be worthless and not recommend anything. My only suggestion is to make sure the beat is somewhat similar to your stride rate to make things easy. When the beat doesn't match your steps at all it can be very annoying.

Dang, I didn't see the last part where he asks what's our favorite song to run to. In that case:

I listen to all kinds of crap when I run especially when I shuffle the entire MP3 player, but ultimately, it depends on what type of running I am doing. If I'm going long, I try to keep it somewhat relaxing. I have found that country, Bob Marley, Cat Stevens (when he was cool), Andre Bocelli and believe it or not, 50 cent provides a nice steady beat/rhythm that makes going long good for me. If I'm doing intervals, good heavy metal works best, not that gutteral stuff, but groups like Rage against the Machine, Metallica, Drowning Pool, Godsmack or anything that has a faster beat/rhythm.

I just added that Dragon Force to my Ipod as well. If that song doesn't get your blood flowing nothing will. Unfortunately all I see are red and yellow dots flying at me when I hear that song now.

My fav song to bike and run to is "I Can't Surf" by Reverend Horton Heat. Its very short. Maybee 2 minutes tops, and very fast paced. Great for a quick sprint in the middle of a long workout.

Les Savy Fav - "The Sweat Descends"
I mean with a title like that...

LSF are great; rolicking post-punk with great hooks.

I listen to podcasts of competitor radio. Find it more entertaining than music and not disruptive to running rhythm.

Currently on my iPod:

-Podcasts from Bill Simmons (The SportsGuy on ESPN.com)
-Sting; Bring On The Night (his live double album with good horn section)
-Genesis; Live Over Europe (great concert recording from recent tour)
-Men at Work; Business as Usual (boy, has this album stood up over the years)
-Billy Joel; Songs in the Attic (his best collection, IMHO)
-Pink Floyd; The Division Bell
-Mozart; The Marriage of Figaro (I don't have tons of classical, but this is awesome)
-Rush; Hold Your fire (takes me back to my senior year in HS every time!)
-Bonnie Raitt; Silver Lining (great combo of soulful guitar, singing, & lyrics)

I have found I prefer a mix of types of music and tempos during my training.

I usually change the lineup every couple weeks, but I make it through the loop a couple times first.

Awesome. Thanks for all the goods. I got off to a good start with the downloads, and ran OUTSIDE for the first time today. My dog is so out of shape (another story, another time). The pod makes all the difference!

Nobody mentioned Love Hurts by Nazareth. I know that it's slow, and people think of it as a love song. However, ever since I saw that Gatorade commercial to it, I associate the song with the pain that one inflicts on themself by training hard.

And as long as we're talking pain, I happen to like 'Pain Lies on the Riverside' by Live, for the last hill on the way home.
