pacing?
Don't worry too much about it,....I too have been running on the treadmill and am from upstate NY. I also find that I pace myself over distance on the TM and when I get outside to do the same run, I am clearly faster (probably due to the scenery and excitement of being outside). However, if you have one, I suggest using a HR monitor in an effort to maintain the same level of intensity in your trainng, inside and out. With mine, I try to maintain the same AVE HR, and still when I get outside, I find my AVE SPEED is faster. So, don't know if I helped you at all in my rantings, just my two cents....
Your extra motivation may help, but I believe there was a thread a while ago that talked about running on treadmills and how you go slower b/c the treadmill absorbs the impact of the foot to an extent (to protect the knees more) which gives you less bounce or propulsion.
As far as pacing goes, the HR monitor is the best bet I'd say, if not you'll just have to go with percieved exertion until you adjust to regular running. But hey, it's a good problem to have since it means it must be warming up.

i have also heard from people that the treadmill absorbs the impact and that makes it easier to run on. but i prefer outdoors over it. at least until recently. i'm actually quite used to the treadmill now since i've had no other option. but i cruised outside. i was running like an 8:30 mile and outdoors i did a sub 7 and i could have gone faster.
so the idea is to get a hr monitor and keep the same rate and guage your times by the heartrate, correct? i think i see how it works. it seems stupid, but in the past i've never really timed runs and if i did i just ran behind a guy i knew would hit the time. thaks for the replies.

i've been runing on a treadmill the last 3 months or so due to recent knee surgery and the cold weather here in central ny. what is the best way to adapt my current pace when i make the move to outdoor training? this is one thing i have never really gotten a handle on over the years. i ran outdoors about a week ago and my avg mile was much faster compared to on the treadmill even though i felt like i was running slower. if i were going farther i would have burned myself out i think. thanks.
