Never heard of them. For a second, I thought they were re-branded Flashpoints but the depth is wrong. I just went through this process a few month ago and it boiled down to two: Hed and Flashpoint. They are both excellent choices, slightly different but they wind up being nearly equal in the end. You're looking at around $1200-$1300 depending on what you want.

I blogged this painstaking process...

If you are looking just for race-day wheels, have you thought about renting? I only race full and half IM's about three times a year, so I rent my wheels. (This not an ad. I have no affiliation with this site.)

So 325 hours a year of training and a 13hr finish gets you into the 16th percentile at Ironman Germany? Dude, wait, what?

My "goods"? You couldn't afford them. I'm high maintenance :)

I read your blog, and I too went with the Hed Jet 60/90 combo. I had been looking at all sorts of combinations (Hed 3/disc, used Zipp's, Real Design etc...). What sold me on the Hed Jets was a phone call to Hed to see what combination they would recommend. After a 20 minute talk about Jets, Stingers and Hed 3's they told me the Jets were the best bet, even though some of the other combos were more $$.

FWIW, I got them last March and love them. For $1,400 for brand new wheels I think they were the best choice for the $$.

Neuvation is selling their C50s for $668 right now. The price says $899, but when you add it to your cart it'll come up as $668.

Tubulars are way better for race wheels. They're lighter and they corner better. If I were to ever get a flat in a race, I'd drop out (tubular or clincher). In theory, you should actually be able to change a tubular quicker. I know Red5 did that at IMAZ last year. You just rip the flat one off and put the new one on and fill it with CO2.

You can get new Planet X 50cm's off ebay for 600 or the 82cm for 750. Not top of the line, but they'll do you just fine for at least a couple years. Again, they're tubulars, so you'll need to get a shop to set them up f you don't have any experience (but ask them to tell you what they're doing so you can do it yourself the next time), and you'll probably spend another 150 on the tires/installation (for Tufo S3 lites, which I would recommend for a good, "affordable" race tire).

I wouldn't recommend Tufos. They're really not that great....highish rolling resistance, not the best flat protection. I'd go for something more like a Vittoria Corsa Evo or Specialized S-works. Tufos are way overrated IMO.

Tubulars are way overrated IMO ;) But that is an argument for another thread... just something the orig poster should be aware there are different views on.

The absolute cheapest race wheel that will provide a significant time benefit is a CH Aero disc cover from Wheelbuilder.com. All the benefit of a disc wheel for $80 (including custom trimming job.) Cant beat it. Find the front aero wheel that suits you best. Or get an aero helmet for $150 and get just as much time savings.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
