Wierdest food eaten during an event
This is probably isn't that weird, but at Ironman's I've mixed the coke and chicken-broth together for a warm, salty/sweet brownish concoction that was the wine of the gods (at the time). I have a stomach like a goat. I always drink the 'free beer for runners' during marathons.
I can't recall anything too strange I've eaten during races, but then again I usually blackout halfway through the run and only come to 20-30 minutes after finishing so who knows who/what I may dine on in that period (that is a joke for those who grew concerned).
The weirdest race associated food I have downed is a delicious Sonic Breakfast Burrito within minutes of finishing a sprint in St. Louis. I am looking forward to making it 4 years of breakfast burritos in a row in a couple months. My dad and sister also do the event and are disgusted to see me holding my delicious post-race snack as I'm cheering them thru the finishing chute. How can you pass on free breakfast burritos?

I think I've just discovered the root cause of why I'm a clydesdale
At IM Brazil they had white cake with frosting and yes I eventually had a piece.
I can't remember if it was Brazil or a 1/2 in Argentina, they didn't have pretzels but they did have salt packets, like the one you get on a flight.
At IM Switzerland they had Red Bull on the run and no I didn't try it...

I think the weirdest thing that i have eaten in a race is a potato wedge dipped in salt.
Of course my wife thinks that it is pretty weird that i eat and actually like gels. to the outside world a small packet of carbohydrate gu is a pretty weird thing to eat so everything is relative i guess.
Help me raise money for the LAF by donating anything that you can. Thank you so much!

I will eat all kinds of crap during a century ride (I assume that count's as an event). I'm going to get my registration money's worth in food. Last time it was chicken burritos with salsa and sour cream. Mmm. That may, however, not have been as wierd as the homemade energy gu that we tried on that race. Nasty and wrong.

I eat anything that sounds good during an adventure race. Gummy bears and sour gummy worms are awesome! Fig Newtons are good. Cold pizza. Cheetos. I think ultras and adventure races lead to the more random foods since intensity is a bit lower.

i would have to agree. i get the strangest cravings when i go long. during the ice age 50 miler i stuffed my pockets with m&ms, pretzels, and starbursts at each aid station.
90% of the time I nothing sounds good so I just eat the plainest (and least energy packed food) stuff I see.
I did almost swallow a safety pin that was hiding in a pocket of sportlegs caps during the start of the SF 1/2 marathon. Got 10% down my throat before I was able to gag it up.
Oh - and you ultramarathonners are crazy! I wish I could do what you guys do--but I'll never know because my masochism does have limits.
Had a Red Bull at a Death Valley event. I poured it in a water bottle during a run so that it'd foam up and eek out all the carbonation. Surprisingly it didn't cause any issues--but nor did it give me any wings.

I agree - ar's are a great excuse for jelly beans, fig newwtons and those little snickers bars (like you get at Halloween)!

While training for an IM, I was doing a century ride that had chocolate at every rest stop. The good things like little snickers and milky way bars and mini reeses cups and M&M - both plain and peanut! What's a girl to do? I ditched the IM nutrition plan that I was supposed to working on and did the whole ride on chocolate (and water). I actually had a pretty good ride and the chocolate was a lot better than gu and gatorade.

I have eaten a Bagel and Beef Jerky in an IM race.

Funny...I had that for breakfast the other morning. Note to self...No beef jerkey before swimming.
Marshmallows?

I had several free beers immediately following Collegiate Nationals last year all I have to say is dehydrated athlete + beer = interesting times

At the San Diego City's finest half marathon there is an ad station sponsored by OMBAC ( old mission beach athletics club ,, bunch of old surfers with a drinking problem) they give out Hoagies and a shot of beer, and half mile futher up the run at you start to notice road decorations from the runners that actaully stopped to fuel up there,, yeah I was one of them ,, didnt hurt my 2 hour run time my finish time was exactly double what the first place guy did he did 1:03 and I did 2:06 and I probably weigh just about double what he does,, I ' ll crush him next time..
During the Bay to Breakers run here in San Francisco, we have a tradition of stopping into a convenience store on the infamous Hayes Street Hill to grab a cold can of malt liquor to cool us down. If you've ever done the Bay to Breakers, you'd understand. Nothing weird during tri's although I agree that there's nothing weirder or more unnatural than intentionally putting Gu's into one's body.
The other week I went for my long run in snowy 20 degree weather. My camelbak froze so I had to eat snow to keep hydrated. To give it flavor I added some gel and it was delicious! I guess my answer is sno-cones, even though it wasn't really an event.

There's this Ultra I do once in awhile...The Catoctin 50k. Not far from here. It's hard.
One time I was in bound ( out and back course) and rolled into an aid station...they were serving Haggis. And Whiskey. ( s single malt scotch if I remember). The race is in August and so hot...the salty haggis really helped! The Whiskey...well, that helped too.

Brilliant!!
I have had the cooked potato wedge and salt, and it really hit the spot.
At any marathon there is usually an aide station, most of the time unofficial, that serves beer. I'll always have a little bit, since they went to the effort of setting it up it would be rude to refuse the hospitality.
At the Cheaspeakeman this fall the last aide station before the end of the marathon had beer, and they were grilling cheeseburgers. It smelled so good and the women were wearing grass skirts and coconut bikini tops so I had to stop for a couple of minutes to appreciate their hospitality. Beer and a burger never tasted so good.
Nothing to it, but to do it

Normally I handle by liquor pretty well but man after one beer I was totally plastered after two I was well gone. Sadly no pictures as all we really did was sit at the finish line under a big tree and cheer and chant for people crossing the finish line, and comment of course on the excellent southern hospitality!

I just posted this on another thread, but I thought it would be interesting as a new subject. What is the wierdest thing you have ever eaten during an event (not post race)? You hear Dean Karnazes talk about eating cheesecake and pizza. Personally, Hardeez cheeseburgers for me during a subfreezing 86 mile ultra-marathon. Man they were good.
