I am new to all this healthy eating and I have been reading about how red meat is not that healthy for you. When I am not training I spend just as much time bow hunting. I do know that wild game is a lot healthier for you than store bought meat. When I clean a harvested animal I am always amazed at the lack of fat. My question is if I eat wild red meat that I harvested with my bow does it allow me to eat more red meat than I would be able to eat if I shopped at the grocery store? I ask this under the assumption that wild game is much better for you than farmed raised animals. I would hate to give up bow hunting but at the same time I am not going to kill something I am not going to eat. Thanks for any help.

Personally, I would eat all the wild game I could. Well, not all I could, but certainly as much as I wanted to. It is definitely a great source of protein.
Here is a little bit of info, though not very scientific:

Out of curiousity, what game do you hunt?

As an avid hunter myself, I think you get more "quality" protien from wild game than from grain fed cattle per ounce due to less fat. I don't know about eating more because of this because my understanding is that the biggest problem with red meat is the cholesterol that is associated with it. You may do some research to see what kind of studies have been done on the amount of cholesterol in wild game as opposed to cattle.

I agree with stewarba. Cholesterol is the largest problem. However wild game is better in quality, and less fatty. I know that buffalo for example (although not "really" wild game, but red meat none the less) has less fat than beef. Ounce for ounce it has less calories. In weight watcher terms 1 ounce of buffalo is =1 point. 1 ounce of beef is 1.5 points. In this respect you can eat more, but I would think the cholesterol may be the inhibitor although I don't know for certain. I know we substitute organic gound buffalo for ground beef and don't even notice the difference. Moose and caribou do the trick too although I often find them too gamey for my taste. Rest of the time its chicken and fish, sometimes a lean porkchop.

Man! You guys have me wanting to go down to the freezer and pull out some deer rump!
One of the other reasons I love game is that there are no hormones or other crap shoved down it's throat. Game meat has almost no cholestrol compared to raised red meats. Hardly any fat. Where a lot of folks get into trouble is how they cook it! Game is store bought meat, health wise, if you're adding sauces fats and other goop to get it to taste more to your liking...As my down home brother- in law- says..."Don't hate...Marinate!"

Anton you crack me up!!!! We pretty much stick to organic as much as possible with everything for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I don't /won't hunt, so pretty much stuck with what I can get at Whole Foods and Trader Joes :( I am sure there are other options, but my laziness has kept me from researching more.

Anything produced by someone trying to make money is going to be filled with crap. I just found out tonight that Tilapia is actually a fish that was bred in such a way that it would be able to thrive on fish poo. F'in GROSS!

With that said--just try and figure out what the hell your wild game is eating. Birds will eat anything--a chucker that eats KFC leftovers won't be much healthier than eating KFC. And while I was out running earlier in the week on a trail that allows both shotgun and bow-hunting, I saw a group of ducks and one geese eating a bloated dead seagull. I'm pretty sure the seagull has been on a strict diet of bottle caps and silicon chips. Wonder if the dude up in Canada who tags one of those birds will even know that for 2 weeks his dinner was dining on Bay Area toxins.

Deer....boar...yeah....how much miracle grow and WeedX do those guys consume?

Depressing....very depressing.

Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.

Cool, I am not worried about the animals I shoot being contaminated. As far as big game goes when I do shoot them it is not the first time I have seen them. Accept for Caribou, but I have not ran into any KFC's up on the North Slope. Thanks for all the advice everyone. Sounds like I can keep the back straps coming!!
