I'm ready to make my next big upgrade on the bike and am thinking about getting some race wheels. What kind of race wheel setups do you guys have? I'm looking at spending around $1,000 (willing to go a little over that). I'll claim complete ingorance as to what to look for in a good set. I'd appreciate any suggestions/advice. Thanks.

Matt

hedcycling.com -- if it's good enough for lance . . .

pick the wheel that fits the type of riding you'll be doing. good article at slowtwitch.com about tri wheel set up -- basically advocates the hed tri spoke and disc combo.

a buddy of mine was looking at the mavic cosmic carbones. i have these and i like them, but i pointed him in the direction of the hed alps. basically same wheel but lighter and cheaper.

i took the new hed disc out this weekend and thought it felt bomber. i couldn't perceive any appreciable speed advantage, but i don't think that's the point. can't wait for the trispoke to show up.

Is anybody running the HED 60's? They seem to be an upgrade from the Ksyrium Elites (somewhat), and about equivalent to the Mavic Carbones. Is it worth it, or should I hold out and spend the extra $400-500 for the Zipp 404's?

As a clydesdale (6'5", 200 pounds), I'm worried about blowing ANY wheel up.

Thanks,

I just recently purchased a set of Topolino wheels because of the advice from my local bike "expert". He swears by these wheels because they are very light, durable, and under $1000 for the set. You'll be hard pressed to find a lighter wheel that you can actually train on as well. He did say he likes the Zipp 404's for racing (only), but he told me to definitely stay away from the 909's. I've used HED Aero's, Tri Spoke, and Disc in the past and didn't really have any problems, but I am going to be doing a lot more triathlons that involve a lot more hills so he recommended me going with a much lighter wheel (one HED Tri Spoke weighs about as much as both of my Topolino wheels). I don't have a lot of miles on my new wheels yet, but they sure seem to accelerate fast. Good luck in your hunt, but remember to ask about the durability because some come with carbon rims that have a short life span. Make sure you are clear on whether you want to train and race on these wheels or just race on them.

My main use for a new set of wheels will be racing only. The Ksyriums that I have are everyday training wheels, though I do have an old crappy set of wheels for riding on the trainer. I didn't see any reason to beat up my wheels sitting on a trainer all winter.

Decisions, Decisions... Guess I'll keep looking
