Depending on the types of road races you do, you may be able to use a tri bike. If so, I would recommend (and you will get as many opinions as there are people here) the Trek Equinox 5. It's a great entry level tri bike with good components and a great frame. The link is below. Whatever you choose, look for at least a mid tier component group i.e. Shimano 105 or Tiagra and at least an aluminum frame. Ride different bikes to see which ones fit you best.

I am very new to this also, and I have never done a tri. I also didn't want to spend too much money. I recently ordered a Motobecane. There are some what a mail order bike brand. There is some assembly required. I did some research on the net for proper fitting, and so far I have an entry level road bike at a decent cost. There is a lot of different strong opinions about these bikes, and I do anticipate getting slammed on this forum for suggesting this. But so far I have a cheap bike that should last me a few years until I decided if I really want to do this stuff.

Charlie- I recently bought a Motobecane mountain bike for much cheaper than a bigger name bike would have been. I know there are many differing opinions on this brand, but besides my bike being on the heavy side, its worked great for me. One of the top young riders in my area rides a Motobecane, so I figured if it was good enough for him, it was more than good enough for me. Hopes it works well for you too.

I have a Motobecane too. Its carbon, light, and has decent components. While it is not Shiek it was pretty inexpensive and you should not get slammed just because it is not a name brand. People have told me good things........However, I did have to put a better seatpost(it had one screw and aluminum) Ieventually put better tires on mine. It does bug me that while that company that sells them spends a lot on advertising in BYCYCLING mag, they do not review any of their bikes. Also it gives one more piece of mind locking it up knowing that 5 grand is not locked up while I eat lunch

if you are just getting into tri's i would suggest a road bike. they are much more versatile than a tri bike and you can easily get clip on aero bars (and a forward seat post if you need it) to make it more aero. that being said, if you are ONLY going to be doing tri's, and training on your own then you may look into a tri bike. personally i have a converted road bike right now until i can save the money to get a dedicated tri bike. at that point my roadie will become a dedicated road so i will have bikes that i can use for any given situation.
a couple of bikes to look into:
Felt F75 (road) or S32 (tri)
Trek 2.1 or 2.3 (road) or equinox 5 (tri)
Cervelo P2SL (tri)
Giant OCR A1 (road) or Trinity A2 (tri)
there are obviously many more choices out there, but these are just a few that i can think of right now that are around $1500. you need to test ride bikes before you can make a decision on which fits you best.

I would recommend going to a bike shop and have them fit you. This way the bike options will present themselves to you rather than trying to make a bike fit your body type. You can get fit for as little as $40. Just make sure you go to a decent shop so that you don't waste your $40. If you fill out your geographical location information, someone can probably make a recommendation.

I agree with tsilcyc go witha good local bike shop (a good one won't demand you buy a $5K bike) that will fit you to the bike and will find you a bike that fits your budget. Another thing is if you have relationship w/ a LBS they can hlep you out when you need an emergency repair
but there a lot of good brands like trek, specialized, felt, cannondale, fuji, cervelo test 'em out and see which you like the best. good luck and have fun!

Felt makes great bikes at wonderful prices. You can get some good components and carbon touches for about 1500 if you go with a felt. I have had one 4 about four years and love it.

Hello, I am in the market for a good road bike to compete in boths tri's and road racing. I have never done a triathlon but have been a competitive runner for quite a while. I have saved up $1,500 for a bike. I know next to nothing about biking, but am looking to get one I can be competitive with. Thanks for any advice that comes my way.
