Hey FutureIronGirl - nice choice for the name
Check out the training section here on the site - it has beginner training plans that you could use.
Then fire off any specific questions as you go.

Welcome Libby, awesome that you and your mom are doing this together. It's hard to just give a blanket of advice, I'd start with some of the articles (http://www.trifuel.com/training) there's a beginners section as well (http://www.trifuel.com/training/beginner). This will give you some background, terminology, basic information and such which is what everyone will be talking about here on the forum.
Also, here are some training plans to maybe get you started and give you some type of structure to start with: http://www.trifuel.com/training/training-programs
most of all, my advice is just have fun and enjoy the journey.
and feel free to post any questions you may have.
THANK YOU for the links!! I was running out of the apartment to the store before the snow got bad and I wanted to get it out there... to maybe save some time digging up old posts and what not but I am searching now!

very cool you and your mom training together. you've got lots of time to get ready. now is the time to start building an endurance base - nice easy stuff at conversation pace and if you're not a strong swimmer maybe learn some drills to help improve your stroke.
BTW love the columbia course you'll have a blast!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Triathlon and TRIFUEL!! You are in good company here. Start out like Joe H said, nice easy training to form an endurance base and work on proper form. I'm excited for you!!
Get mom to send you that bike when it warms up. Getting on a bike after only spinning on the stationary can be a rude awakening.
And check out the trails on Kent Island along Hwy50. There are some great wooded sections, but the wind off the bay can be tough!
Welcome!! You will find the trifuelers very fun and informative.
My mom and I also do tris together. It has been a great experience for us. I especially like it when my kids are at the race yelling "go grandma"
Good luck to both of you. Enjoy!
Here's my 2 cents worth- the 6 things I wish I knew before my first race:

Good luck in the race!
So...
Have you been swimming, biking and running?
Alot!?!? :-D
Nothing to it, but to do it
I guess the next question is- has your MOM been swimming, biking and running a lot?! It seems to me the best thing about what you're doing is that you're doing it with your mom, having you BOTH finish would be a great thing.
How exciting to have your mom as a training partner! Go Girls!

Hi everyone! I am brand new to this whole triathlon thing. My mom and I are deciding to take on the Iron Girl in August and I have to say that I really have no idea where to start. General conditioning I am sure, but... what types of things should I be doing. I have access to a stationary bike, indoor pool and a track/treadmill until the beginning of May and then I'll be back training with my mom where it won't be a problem. (I have a bike at home, can run on the road, and open water to swim in... brr!)
If anyone has general suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Clearly, I am not trying to break any records, but I'm not trying to come in last either!
Thanks for any help!
