With triathlons being our common ground, I am confused as to why so many of you would choose to live so dang far to the frozen north.......you know we have sun down here right? I was born in Canada and love a little snow everynow and then, but I mean come on guys (and girls).......join the blue haired horde of retirees and move to the south

I enjoy winter and winter sports....except for this time of the year. I have biking fever and it ins't quite warm enough to get out. I have considered moving a bit further south, where the winters are a bit milder. But, most of my family has stayed in this area and being close to them is important to me. If the family had scattered across the nation, then I definitely would have moved to a warmer climate.

Per my recent post on yucky winter, you know how I feel about it. Would love to live further south again, but with two PhDs in music in the family, you can imagine we go where the jobs are. So for the immediate future I'm Minnesota bound. But actually, there are so many tris in Minnesota and Wisconsin. So the shorter season is absolutely booked with races. I even get to be picky about how far I wanna drive and still race every weekend, if I want. That's the tradeoff.

I like the 4 distinct seasons of the Northeast. I admit that winter can get a bit long and tiring, but it is what I have always known and have never given serious thought to moving South. The first nice days of spring are always something to get excited about. My family is here as well and we are close. The only problem I have is with winter biking. I stay inside on the trainer because I am a wimp for riding below 45 degrees.

Is that because of the alligators on the swim ? ;)

Oh, and I live in Utah because that's where they pay me to go to school. Once I'm done with the Master's degree, I'm getting a PhD, and UT Austin is the first choice right now. The weather is actually a big reason that we want to move there.

I do admit that winters in MI are pretty tough. But after doing tris all over the country nothing is better than a Tri in the Fall when the leaves are changing, air is crisp, and the water is cool. Absolutely awesome.

In MI you don’t have to worry about swimming in salt, or having something bite/sting you.

Living in the north you are more well rounded with different activities/sports not having to train all year long in sun.

Hell Yeah, swimming coupled with the "Fight or Flight" response make for a great workout. Check out what crawled up out of my backyard a few years ago!

I agree with the fact that spring is very exciting for us in the north. I'm one of those who ride on a trainer from December to April, and yes, at this time of the year, I'm very itchy for a ride outside. But there's other stuff to do in the snow, and it breaks the routine. Plus, it's so beautiful. I definitely love the seasons here. I used to live in a colder place than Toronto (North-East in Quebec), so I sort of moved south already. :o) And yes it's true, the worst weather we get around here is snowstorms and thunderstorms. No hurricanes, no tornadoes, and our heat waves are like
an ordinary summer day in California.
I love going south, but I think we do appreciate the nice weather more than people living there year round. Also, I don't want to get into a political/patriotic discussion at all, but I like Canada.

1. Here at least I can train year round. Not too hot, not too cold
2. Jobs and incomes are plentiful

Would not want to live anywhere else honestly (been all over). Can hike, bike run, swim , camp , SCUBA all in the area. Other than a little rain it is great here.

I lived in the Northeast for most of my life, but moved South about ten years ago (hubby's job). I can tell you I don't miss the bitter cold and having to dig out my car, but I do miss the winter sports and skiing every other weekend. It is nice, however, to do stuff outside most of the year, but at least you guys can get decent pizza : D

I have lived in the New Jersey/New York Area most of my life.
I am okay with the variety of the seasons.

We don't have to worry about alligators in the Hudson River when we do the NY tri. Between the water quality and the rats, the alligators wouldn't survive it. ;-)

I always hated the winters here in the north while I was growing up. I hated it to the point that I vowed to move south once the opportunity arose. Got into grad school and made the move to Atlanta for two years. The winters in the north are cold, and long. However, the summers in the south are hot, and much longer (plus, the lack of snow in the winter is not an indication that it's warm). In my opinion, you can much more readily get outside and be active in the cold northern winter than you can in the hot southern summer. I don't fault anyone for wanting to move south - especially after the third or fourth Nor'easter of the season. But for me, suffering in the relentless heat is just not fun. The best solution would be to become independently wealthy so that you can quit your job and buy a northern house and a southern house. That's all part of my five year plan (that I started 8 years ago).

Why do I live here in Canada? Because I was able to watch 2 hockey games tonight while on the trainer. Other than that, no green card, no job. No problem.

Im in metro detroit. I was born here. Now that ive purchased a good bike, my savigns account has turned into my, "get the hell out of here fund" On top of weather sucking, theres no economy at all. Its great.

In fact check this out.

Its great to live in america's most miserable city! I spent 2 hours yesterday online looking at apartments in warm places. I have decided that no matter what it takes, this will be my last winter here.

Dude, what the hell are you doing? We've got enough northerners moving down here and making housing and taxes go through the roof. I especially dont need anymore pennsylvanians or whatever on the road. Crazy drivers! I mean, we've got impatient people down here, but I bet most accidents are actually caused by people origonally from New England ;)

Seriously, I wouldnt mind moving to Colorado or pretty much anywhere out west. I love XC skiing, snowboarding, and MTBing on real mountain. Backpacking is great, too. And listening to the Westerns bitch about all the people moving there :D

Come on in! More people = my property value goes up (although its already trippled in value in the last 12 years). On a side note. If you are concerned about property taxes this is not the place to be. My taxes are 1/2 the ammt of my mtg payment--no I am not making this up. On a happy note I COULD sell my house still (as business is still booming here) and buy one outright down there where y'all are...ohhh there is a thought but hot sweaty summers are just not fun for me, and I can always visit!

Hey! I'll have you know that we Pennsylvanians are outstanding drivers. Mario Andretti lives just down the road and we consider him and his family just above average. : ) I think you might have meant NY (we are staying in the left lane no matter what) drivers. Just kidding NY people.

My parents vacation in FLA twice each winter and they are both slow drivers. When they return they always complain about how slow the traffic moves in the Naples area.

Pennsylvania drivers are the worst! Its like they make up their own traffic laws and can't read signs. New York drivers are fine (excluding Staten Island), they even understand how to merge.

Oh how I wish. Unfortunately in many southern climates (cough cough, US) us teachers aren't treated as well. I would definetely consider some exotic local if it was feasible, but not usually so!
