Running Slow Killed me!!

I did speed training at the track yesterday, but I ran to and from the track (VERY SLOWLY) and it just KILLED ME! It was probably under 3 miles away, and it took me about 30min (like I said, very slow, more of a jog). I had to cut my speed training short because I was in so much pain. the run home was terrible. I felt like I had just finished a marathon.

I was SOOO sore yesterday and I had very little energy to do anything. It may be because I did a combo trainer day Saturday, rode in the morning and night. I don’t understand why running so slow hurt so darn bad!!

Has anyone else had a problem with running very slow and it being very difficult?? I'm interested to see what you all have to say.

I've had a similar feeling. I usually run at a pretty decent pace most of the time, but my fiancee is much slower than me (3 minutes or so to the mile at least) and I was trying to run with her to watch her form, break the monotony and whatnot. I found that my legs were pretty sore going a few miles at her pace.

My best guess to the reason for this was that I was focusing on slowing my overall speed down and was converting the force from the ground into more vertical, up and down, movement than horizontal (so I didn't get ahead of her). So my legs were bouncing more leading to more impact. Could be crazy, but that's how I justified it.

I have noticed a similiar sensation when I slow my pace to run with my wife. I feel it mostly in my calves. My guess is in line with jsk85 as I noticed that my feet spend more time on the ground. I would guess it has something to do with engaging more fast/slow (I always get these backwards) twitch muscles that you aren't used to using when you run at your normal pace.

i get sore too...but it's more from just being slow and not quite in stellar running shape [I'm working on it!] :)

I also find that my soreness/tiredness/general-feeling-of-beat-upedness depends a lot on the pace but also on the road surface. One of my regular runs is on concrete and I always finish it feeling really dead. If this wasn't your usual route, you might consider what the running surface was like and whether that has anything to do with it.

What were your workouts like prior to this day? When you say you were in pain, is it just muscle pain or was anything else hurting? Sometimes you just have bad days.

I wonder if the pain was caused by the increased vertical during your stride due to the slower running. When you land, especially when jogging, what part of your foot do you tend to land on?

My knees always hurt more when I slow down 1.5 to 2 minutes/mile slower. I attribute it to a change in form and being on my feet longer. I only get this though if I'm running 20-30 miles, the 3-6 mile stuff doesn't bother me. Your muscles get trained a very specifc way as I'm sure everyone here knows, that also means your body learns to handle stresses a very specific way. If you change that up your body is going to say what the %#^@!

On the other hand, I purposefully include light running days (same as biking and swimming) every few weeks at a slow pace and I always come back faster and more refreshed when I dial it up again.

I wonder if you are running slower by lowering your cadence. If you are, its possible it comes about because your legs are carrying the load of your weight for a longer time period with each step. Having spent time learning to slow down in my training this year, I notice a huge difference between running slow with a slow cadence and running slow with a high cadnece, but shorter and quicker steps.

Just a thought.

I realized this when I started runnning. I did a 5K loop in about 31 minutes and felt like udder poop, this continued for about 3 weeks until I thought "what the hay I'm going to run fast and see how long I can hang on" I finished the loop in about 24 min and felt a lot better. the faster pace got me into a more natural rhythm and I had a lot more "momentum"

well I FOUND THE REASON!! even though some of your explanations are probably correct and most likely contributed to my pain, the ultimate reason was my appendix!! The pain I was feeling was because my appendix was swollen and I just had it removed last night. I am actually writting you all from my hospital bed!

I am feeling MUCH better, but I am very dissappointed/angry I won't be able to train for a little while...well, thats at least what they said, but what do doctors know ;)... I appreciate the responses and just wanted to let you all know why I was in so much pain. Recovery in progress!!

Thanks for the support...i definetly wont be "ENJOYING" my recovery..I am pissed that I have to take time off...I'm on the U of Delaware cycling team and I have a cycling race this weekend I have to miss, along with one next weekend at least. But more importantly, it is a set back in my training for the upcoming tri season...not happy at all!! Anyway, the doc said at least 2 weeks (well thats when my post-op is scheduled)...give me a week and i'll bet I'll be doing something...:)...

If you all train hard for me...maybe it will make me feel a little better..:)...or if you just appreciate that your able to move and doing something...

My question of the day:
why do I have an organ that I don't use and just have to remove anyway and set my training back??? haha :) (i think my drugs are talking)

*as you can see, now that I have nothing to do but recover, I will be making more pointless posts on here ...haha

Yeah, I would not have guessed organ trouble. I just thought of something though...with something removed from your body, your power to weight ratio just got better. The glass is always half full my friend. I wish you a speedy recovery.

I like your thinking, but your appendix is about the size of a worm. And I think the weight I have gained from not training negates the ounce or so my appendix weighed. So i think I was better off before all this happened.

Anyway, I AM BACK!! I had my post-op visit with the doc today and he said I am ok the train. I specifically asked him if I could ride a bike and run, and he said the word I have been waiting 2 weeks to hear....YES...so I’ll be on my trainer tonight...

I couldn't be more happy to put myself through hours of pain again...there has to be something wrong with me?
