Anyone ever use one of those PowerBreathe lung muscle trainers
I tried one - I found it to be a complete waste of $.

That is exactly what I thought but then again I never used it so I really didn't have anything to go off of.
I love the powerbreathe. I can't attest to a faster 40K TT, but I WILL say that it has helped my swimming tremendously. I can't quote faster times or anything, but what it does provide me is a much better 'breath' while swimming. I never find myself gasping for that next breath on short hard sets. I'm a MUCH better runner than swimmer, and I believe this is mostly a confidence issue. When I'm running, I'll push much harder because there is unlimited air. When I swim, I'm much more apt to take it easy because I don't like that 'waiting for my next breath' feeling. Once I started using powerbreathe, I noticed that my breathing was much more comfortable and even when I pushed hard, I felt like I was getting enough air. One negative though...I've found that if I take a week off and don't do some maintenance with it, I start feeling tight in the chest again. I'm not saying go out and buy it...but for me, the powerbreathe really boosted my confidence in the water and, in my experience, a boost in confidence=a boost in performance. That's my two cents.
see above....
So you joined six and a half hours ago then immediately give us a personal about the attributes to a device most of us know to be a complete scam? Thing does not work, period.
WOW!!! Just thought I'd add my two cents. I didn't expect to be scolded! I've been reading articles on this site for some time and just thought this was a topic I had some experience with. Sounds like someone needs to 'take a few deep breaths'. What's wrong TriSig...it doesn't work cuz you tried it and you're no faster than when you began? Have you ever tried it? What didn't you like about it?
Why not post something useful instead of 'a complete scam'? Maybe you could tell us WHY you think its a scam instead of whining like a frustrated child. If all of your other 33 posts were as well thought out, maybe you should wait another 619 days before posting again! Better yet, maybe if you spent more time training and less complaining, you wouldn't be so bitter in the first place!
Hehe...people get into attack mode very quickly around here if they catch even a hint of a sales pitch just to let you know. LOL

+1. I'm usually quick to pounce too, but I've been trying to give people the benefit of the doubt. It did seem dodgy how he quoted himself, as if to push it back to the top of the "recent posts" again or something.

+2....um yeah.....trisigs initial reaction is reasonably defendable mrearl, just relax though........although he definately implied that you are an advertiser, his real dis was on the product
which, by the way, you seemed to take quite personally
as an aside, I saw a cool advertisement for this face workout machine that you had to hook up elctrodes to your face and it would shock the muscles, make them move, and therefore work out your face muscles providing not only lift but a reduction in wrinkles associated with aging........while it hasn't helped my 40k TT time, my face is completely ripped

Getting a little testy on here :)
Put in me the bogus category. Call me all school but nothing will build your lung "muscles" like good old fashion hard work.
By the way, your lung is not a muscle and cant be "built up"
You body can become more efficient at extracting and using the 02 that you breath in but your lungs are not going to become more muscular.
Help me raise money for the LAF by donating anything that you can. Thank you so much!

I think I finally found a comic that describes Trifuelers' response to "scams"...

"Every journey has a secret destination of which the traveler is unaware." —Martin Buber
That cracks me up Shiba, and sorry I pounced a little quickly but I hate it when advertisers use this forum to peddle (pun not intended). But if you want better feedback, as others have said: the lung is not a muscle, it can't be strengthened. And even if it could be, it would make no difference, as endurance athletes our problem is not getting enough oxygen into our lungs, it's getting it into our blood. This is determined by red blood cell count VO2 and so on..If you had posted about sleeping in a low oxygen chamber it would have sounded more legit (too legit, in fact, to quit.) So no I don't think that a diaphragm or lung strengthener will do any more than possibly give you more forceful hiccups.
And insulting someone's speed or training won't get you too far either on this site, something you would know if you really have been reading it for as long as you say you have. I assure you, I'm plenty fast, and work a LOT in my community to get others involved in cycling and tri's, or just be fit in any way. The only thing I get bitter about is out of place forum advertising. If you are not an advertiser, I apologize for jumping to that conclusion so quickly. And I will say that even responding again at all is a good sign you aren't, but you must admit that your post seemed a bit sketchy.
theshiba......thanks for that, I literally just laughed out loud (and I'm an uncomfortably loud laugher) at the office and noone else understands why i think it's that funny, but dear god, it sure is

This may need to be started as a second posting, but I am having the same problem breathing while swimming as mrearl is claiming the PowerBreathe has corrected. I have been doing plenty of form drills and I feel comfortable in the water, but after a short distance I feel like I am rushing my next breath. I am new to swimming so I probably just need to get into my swimming rhythm, but does anyone have any suggestions or know of any good articles to help with this problem?

Ok...If this equipment is crap (I have to admit that I haven't used it but it seems like most members of the forum feel that way) then why is the Ironman Store selling these things. You would think that that store more then any would have a certain standard or am I being too critical. Just a thought : )
Stores sell things that make them money. It has nothing to do with whether or not it's crap. As an example, have you ever heard of "Head On". It's basically a placebo that you rub on your forehead that does nothing at all, and has no medicinal ingredients. It's complete crap, and anyone that says otherwise is wrong. But, you can buy it at Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Target, and plenty of other places.
The Ironman Store is in business to make money. If they can sell something, they will. If you were willing to pay money for a steaming dog turd, they would sell it to you. Plain and simple.

I happen to treasure my steaming dog turd with the MDot logo. I keep it on the mantle in my living room and have even named it 'skippy'.
Ironman will put their logo on any P.O.S. that will pay for the privilege. I find no correlation between product quality and the presence of an MDot logo.
The Bob stroller is great But I've owned $10 sunglasses with the MDot logo that I bought at a truck stop. I love the Timex watches, but who are they kidding with a T3 bed?

A friend of mine just one of these PowerBreathe muscle trainers
Supposable you can breathe into this device twice a day and it builds up your lungs to help your endurance.
He claims it works but he has only had it for 2 weeks now so not sure if it works or it is all mental. Has anybody used one of these and had success. Sounds like one of those too good to be true products but figured I would ask the forum before I started making fun of him : )
