How long is an adequate Recovery/Rest Period ?
It's different for everyone. I went straight from racing to base back in November and I'm starting my build phase right now with no off time. Other people might need a month. That's something that you need to figure out on your own. It'll probably also change from year to year.

Not fast enough.
I usually break from sometime in November through the end of December. As Gator points out, each person is different. For me, the best way to not lose too much fitness is to have unstructured weeks that never have a workout that exceeds two hours. I only do things when I want to so I might run the dog for 30 minutes on one day, hop on the trainer for an hour another day, maybe swim a few times here and there, and the two hour day is a bike. My runs will never exceed 10K although I may find some local 10Ks to race.
To give you an idea, the first week of December 2007:
- 2 runs for a total of 6.26 miles and a total time of 0:51:46
- 5 bikes for a total of 106.69 miles and a total time of 6:11:33
- 1 swim for a total of 1.00 miles and a total time of 0:30:19
At the end of the season in 2007, I felt tired and on the border of getting injured. My training started again on January 7, 2008. For the 1.5 months I took off from structured training, I still logged:
- 19:30:48 biking for a total of 319.04 miles
- 03:32:13 running for a total of 25.99 miles
- 08:13:12 swimming for a total of 16.00 miles
When I came back, I was healed, refreshed, and couldn't wait to get back into training. So the point to all of this is that "off" doesn't mean stop doing everything and let your muscles atrophy. It means, recover physically and mentally, and back it down to unstructured.

People in warm weather should be required to take time off. It's not fair to the rest of us.
lol, TryScott I know you feel, I am in Alaska.

I live in Florida so there are a triathlon, duathlon, runs, swim meets etc... all year round. I have raced all of 2007 and just recently I did a 70.3 in November, a Half and Full Marathon in December, a Marathon in January, and a Half Marathon in February. Tri seaon has already started in FL and my first Tri is schedlued mid March. I feel I need to let my system rest although I have been in Florida 70.3 base training mode for seven weeks now. What is a good OFF or Recovery period without impact my training too much but allowing muscles and bones to rest ? Honestly the one area I am feeling it most is running.
