Ironman Concept Born 30 Years Ago Today
Happy 30th IM.
I dvr'd the coverage of kona this year and am averaging watching once overy 3-4 days. It's so dang inspiring...
I always told myslef i was only doing this to get in shape and would never bother with anything over sprints but watching that has my eye-ing an oly later this year and potentially a HIM next year.....

Yes, NBC's coverage of the IM is top-notch and ABC's 1982 coverage of Julie Moss's finish at Kona was the defining moment of TV Ironman coverage. But don't get all misty-eyed watching a 90-minute package of mostly pros and top age groupers who make it look easy. Be careful of what you wish for :)

30 years ago the Ironman concept was born in Honolulu when 15 people attempted the challenge of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run.
I remember seeing races like this on ABC's Wide World of Sports many many years ago. Back then I don't think I ever imaged of being able to do one or attempt a race like that. Now days I sit here with 3 Ironman races under my belt.
I don't think they knew back then what impact it would have on the global endurance sports market we have today.
