Energy Drinks/Mixes
infinit...
Ditto on the Infinit here.

I've heard good things about Infinit, but I haven't tried it. I use a mix of Nuun and CarboPro. But really only on long bike rides -- just water or Nuun alone other times.

We're had a few threads in the past about what everyone's favorite Carb/Sports Drink is... general consensus seemed to be leaning toward Gatorade Endurance.
But, if you are asking about an "Energy Drink" (as in Red Bull) I am not sure there will be many endorsers on this site. Most of them are loaded with sugar and other stuff that you just don't really need to be messing with. I wouldn't recommend anything stronger than a cup of coffee. If you're tired, you're not getting enough sleep. Bottom line.

This brings up a question I've been turning over the past few days: I'm planning to try an all-raw diet for the next month, but I'm not sure what to do for energy drink/gel on long rides. Maybe just honey dissolved in water? Maybe mashed up bananas?
I'll do some experimenting and keep you updated, because whatever I end up using is bound to be all-natural.
Brendan Brazier is a vegan triathlete with a book out consisting of raw energy foods - "The Thrive Diet" - he uses coconut water, dates, banana, hemp protein, berries etc...could be worth looking into.

Wow. Please let me know how you do with this. I've considered making a big change in my diet many times and I haven't been able to make that jump yet.
I think the big reason is I don't have a ton a time as it is and food prep takes time.
Some friends of mine just ordered up that "Thrive Diet" book / cookbook. I'll get a look at that soon. To be honest I think I'm more likely to actually make this sort of change if I wasn't training... as much. Maybe next off season??
Sorry not an answer to either question. Just chiming in that I would be interested to hear more about this in another post some time.
I used Infinit and liked it, but for long course - it was more of a hassle carrying and mixing on the go - so switched back to Gatorade - which is what is on course - Now if Infinit could bump Gatorade as the on course supplier - that would be pretty cool.

I don't know if this will qualify, but my first attempt at homemade gel was about 4 parts brown rice syrup and one part agave nectar. It ended up tasting nasty because I put in too much sea salt and didn't let it desolve well enough. If you want to give it a shot, though, you can get the syrup and nectar at any health food/organic store.
Good luck. I've gone back to good old maltodextrin for my homemade brews though. Here is an old thread about homebrews.

I remember your recipe Cap'n...
There are a couple more recipes/ideas here:
Dude! Why do you gotta go and knock my gu? If you had tried round 1, you would have been singing the praises of round 2! (I did use too much extract though.)
I think my new plan is to go to Target tomorrow morning and get like 10 bags of the candy conversation hearts on sale and use them on the long rides. Not only do you get the calories you need, but you get positive reinforcement throughough the entire ride. "U R A Q T" Thanks little candy!

Oh, and with the cross training, let's just say I don't fall down quite as much on the DDR mat as I do on the rollers.

If the 101 series was still going, that'd be true.
Did you ever try simply concentrating your Infinit and going that route? I carry mine in 2x to 3x concentrate, though have gotten the bottles up to 5x with no problems. I can't imagine trying to mix it on the course (as is when I'm mixing I tend to stir it for a while, as shaking makes it too bubbly with my formula).

I guess I didn't realize that Infinit was really a candidate for going to a multi-hour concentrate. Cuz I am doing just that with Perpetuem... Hmmmm may need to reconsider this - then again I just received several big tubs of Perpetuem a week or so ago - may try it once I use up that supply.
So, do you go very light on the taste/sweetness in the formula mix?

Ahhh... you must've been one of the 149 racers. Pretty decent race, it's a shame it went under.

Nuun !
While I also love nuun, I wouldn't consider it alone an energy drink. It has electrolytes, but to me an energy drink helps keep up your energy, which takes calories (which nuun doens't have). Nuun with CarboPro though... ;)

I like cytomax- tastes good and has healthy ingredients, and I use Xtreme water (x2o)- a little tea-bag sachet you add to your bottle and shake up. It adds 72 electrolytes, and it breaks down the surface tension of the water so you ingest it better/ faster- it also has an alkalizing effect.
cytomax you can get anywhere, x2o link in my sig...

Infinit - I concentrate the Infinit - 1 bottle - 2000cals (for IMs) No need to pick up the warm gatorade on course.

Hi all,
I was curious to see your recommendations for energy drinks? Stuff that's natural and isn't loaded with... well not so healthy stuff. :P
Thanks!
