Triathlete mag parent buys Inside Tri parent company
Should be interesting how this works out.
Is there room in one company for 2 magazines with the same focus?
Certainly will be interesting. Not much church and state anymore. Owning both the US triathlon magazines, the dominant cycling magazine, tons of local magazines in competitor, and a bunch of Marathons (Rock n Roll). My understanding is all the media property is to support their plans for bigger events and promoting those. My guess is they were more interested in Velonews and will be launching some cycling events. As well, don't be surprised to see them go after Ironman in the states, hopefully more Iron distance events are in our future.
Here is the press release from Inside Triathlon
Inside Triathlon To Be Sold
The owners of Inside Triathlon have entered into an agreement for the sale of the magazine, its website and parent company, Inside Communications Inc., to Competitor Group Inc., a recently formed private equity-financed media company based in San Diego.
The deal, announced to staff on Friday, is intended to add needed financial clout to Inside Triathlon and other ICI divisions, including VeloNews magazine, VeloPress, VeloGear and VeloSwap.

IT has had a couple changes in leadership over the last couple years (I think) I like it a little bit more than triathlete but am not sure they both can survive.
There's lots of precedent for one company owning multiple magazines catering to same ideas, especially if they have slightly different viewpoint. For example, Ski Magazine and Skiing magazine are both owned by the same company. They both address the skiing market, but one does it from a decidedly younger market viewpoint.
In some senses, its a bit easier for one company to own both since it can control the viewpoints and prevent they two mags from competing for the same readers. Conversely, it takes away that very competition, so maybe the mags become complacent and boring...
Certainly there are some mags and concepts that this works well, but as long as they truly understand the readership, viewpoint and personality of both magazines it should be possible to own and run them both.
It certainly makes it easier to market to advertisers... If the advertiser says its the wrong audience... "but look I have this other one too!"
Let's hope they spent the time to really understand the readerships. Without that knowledge, it can get shaky for a while in a merger of a magazine.
I find those mags pretty boring and fluffy. The only times I read them is if they stuff a free issue in a goody bag.
My understanding is all the media property is to support their plans for bigger events and promoting those.

Either two magazines that will be the mouthpieces of WTC or one that will be!
I stopped reading them ages ago...like any niche magazine, you can only read the same article (repackaged) so many times. They tend to be for folks new to the sport.

Who needs magazines when we have Trifuel.com? The writing and editing here is quite good.

+1. And, as much as we've been complaining about spam lately, there's a lot less advertising. Honestly, most magazines are about 75% ads. And they're always that thick paper that keep you from flipping from page to page. Freaking magazines.

Ah, thanks guys. I agree with Anton on the content. Everyone has the same stuff and it's hard to come up with new ways to write about the same topics. That side of things is similar on here, but I try to introduce new coaches each year to maybe get some different perspectives.
That said, what makes Trifuel different and perhaps better in some ways is your (the Trifuelers) participation. There was a lot of concern (from me and the regulars) when we changed platforms, but I honestly think it's working better (once you get the hang of it). I rarely see any forums posts going unanswered and the discussions are of good quality and helpful. The events directory looks better than it has in years thanks to you guys adding events, and the gear stuff is turning out to be useful as well. Surpised to see how many people use the Garmin, I wouldn't have predicted it was more popular among us than Polar or Suunto stuff...
Anyway, guess just saying if this competes at all in usefulness it has more to do with you guys than it does with me.
I completely agree that for my time, I'd much rather spend it reading trifuel than flipping the pages of either magazine. The user created and challenged information is to me a fantastic resource. No doubt I will buy product advertised in the mags - but I'd much rather buy it because I learned about it here.
For what its worth - you do a great job fostering this place Tribro.
I've been really disappointed with both tri mags, to be honest. They really lack quality writing, and for the most part spend their time on race coverage, and gear. I'd like to see a tri mag from Rodale... I really like the quality and style of articles in Runner's World, and it would be nice to see writing like that from a Triathlon perspective.
Triathlon is cool, and I like to know who's doing what, but after the 5th article on Random ITU race of the week, it gets old. More about people, less about races.

I sell magazine ads, although not in anything sport related. And as an industry type I have to say that the "Road to Kona" bonus issue of triathlete looked like a mass of poop this year. Low content, poor layout, floating ads. I remember a few years ago that they recycled photos a lot too, so that you were basically looking at the same issue month after month!
I haven't seen anything on Trifuel yet that resembles the annual Triathlete swimsuit issue ;-)

Why do you think I added the photo gallery ;)
Gonna find some models who've swam, run, and rode a bike at least once in their lifetime, call them triathletes, and throw some tyr one-piece suits on them, maybe an elephant or monkey in the background, and wa la a swimsuit issue...
or...
we can gather a bunch of real women doing an actual triathlon

Just read that Falcon bought the parent company of Inside Triathlon Magazine. Falcon earlier had bought the parent of Triathlete Magazine and Competitor. Wonder if they plan on having 2 magazines or merge them together. Both mag's have pro's and con's.
