Has anyone here ever won a spot via the lottery to Kona? Do you know how many folks are in the lottery? Finally, I know you have to complete at least a 1/2 IM to validate if you win, but is that ANY half distance race that is certified? I assume it does not HAVE to be an official 70.3 race? Thanks (as you can tell I entered the lottery - my wife talked me into it - did IMLP in 2006 and got the bug again..)

I'm not sure myself, but I would start here:

Right here. 200 folks 50 of which are picked from outside the U.S. Not sure on the race. e-mail 'em.
I've heard that its any USAT certified HIM or IM distance race. Good luck!

Have I won a spot - no. Do I know someone who has - two friends (after 3 years and 6 years, respectively). I can't say how many are in or the odds from that, but there are two different levels of lottery you can enter.

Lottery News Release.

There are 200 spots overall, 150 to US citizens and 50 to non-US citizens. The first 100 US spots and first 25 non-US spots are drawn only from Passport Club members. The remaining 50 US and 25 non-US spots are then drawn from any Passport Club member that didn't get in the first 100/25 and all other lottery entries. It's $35 for the initial lottery entry and $50 extra for Passport Club membership.

The HIM or IM race simply needs to be a certified distance race.

I've entered the lottery twice and was successful BOTH times (guess I'm just lucky as I know of someone who has entered every year for the last 15 years and never got in). Best news this year was John Wragg who completed his 101th Ironman this year, he won himself a slot!

Great article on the lottery

Thanks tribro! Very exciting. Did IMLP in 2006, but i realize Hawaii is a whole different game; however, just hope to have fun training, racing and enjoy the event with my family...and not embarras myself in the process....lol

Well done Macker..

Only advise I'd give is..

a) get yourself a swim suit (everyone has one and they do help), the swim is magical..
b) take your time on the bike and make sure you have plenty of sunscreen (the last 30km is a killer - well was for me) - make sure you drive out to Hawi and see the bike course first hand (I got the wife to drop me off with my bike on the Wednesday beforehand and cycled back to Kona)
c) whilst you gotta cool down on the run, your going to get blisters when your feet get wet, so if you can try and prevent this. go out to the Energy Lab and run it when it's hot as if your like me it will be dark when you get there.
d) take your time, enjoy it, everyone who finishes gets the same medal, so why bother killing yourself. it's very social on the run at the rear of the field...
e) buy loads of videos on the Ironman World Champs and savour the atomosphere before you get there..
f) take loads of money to buy finishers merchandise (available on the Sunday after the race)

Cheers
