Cheap upgrade wheels (~$200): Easton Vista, Neuvation M28, Reynolds Alta Comp, others?
1700 grams to 1800 grams is a lightening upgrade? What type of wheels do you have now and how much do they weigh?

Hehe, take it easy. Not everyone has $1000 in change inbetween the couch cushions.
Alex AT450, 2200g. And I still can do a hilly 40k in 1:09 (~21mph?)...with pedal clips! (forgot my bike shoes at home).
So yeah, I'm not buying racing only wheels, I'm buying racing/training/touring wheels.

What are these unbadged 30mm Niobiums you reference? If they are durable that could be a good choice.
Here is an pretty good choice of wheels in your price range. And they are both aero and durable, I can vouch for the durability as I use these as my daily riding, and some racing wheels. They are on sale also.

Blackspire Aero 700c - 1636 grams a set - $249 (normally $450)

also, I would go with the neuvation's if you want to add 90 grams and save %50 bucks.

Yeah, Neuvations are at the top of the list.
The "unbadged" wheels are a rebuilt set for sale on ebay:

30mm Niobium rims
EZO Japan stainless steel cartridge bearings. SMOOTH
SAPIM Leader 14g Spokes

New Quick Release Skewers

Not sure what the final sale price will be, but I might make a bid.
Those Blackspire's are nice too, but with so many choices for $50-75 less, I find it hard to justify unless they are significantly more durable somehow. I'm actually wondering if they aren't just the exact same wheels as Neuvation & Forte Titan's (I've heard they're the same, just different stickers).

Speaking of which ...
Forte Titan ($120!!!) 1750g
We might have a winner!
Anyone have bad news about this wheelset?

You might also look into some Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheels off Ebay or something. I have a set of Ksyrium SL's and they are really durable light and fast. I got them lightly used for a steal. I also use some Bontrager Aero Race Lites that feel slower.
I REALLY like my Mavic wheels.
I've been scoping Ebay for lightly used wheelsets, but I think there's alot of people doing the same right now. Gearing up for this coming season I guess.
I'm down to the Easton Vista ($160 with shipping included on Jenson) and the Forte Titan ($150 on Performance bike). Both are pretty sweet deals, but the Eastons are 30mm profile (though 100g heavier). Should be more aero, eh? Plus all my rides are pretty flat and I'm not that worried about weight.

The eastons are very tough wheels--I'm using a pair for training on my tri bike and like them a lot. Many people race with them on tri bikes prior to buying race wheels (they used to come stock on most/all Cervelos).
I wouldn't call them exactly aero, though. Maybe a bit more than standard box rims, but they're not really in the same league as aero race wheels. Race wheels usually start with 40-50mm rims, and most triathletes opt for 60mm or more, except in the very worst wind conditions. If those Eastons are really 500g lighter than your current set, and you don't want to use that money to start saving for race wheels, then at $160 they're not a bad idea.
i have the neuvation m28 aeros. they are great wheels, have been basically bulletproof. the only problem i have had was a broken hub flange. my sheer power (ha) tore the spoke out the the hub...and left me stranded 7 miles from home...what a wonderful afternoon. i digress, neuvation has great customer service. a new wheel was in the mail and at my door in a few days with paid postage to send the defective one back. he sent a beefier flange so that this wont happen again.
Neuvation wheels have been known to have that rear hub flange failure. They supposedly fixed the problem with a redesign of the wheels. In doing as little research on my part, At one point in time I was looking into getting a set of Neuvation wheels or the Forte Titan wheels you mentioned until I heard that both of them were prone to getting the same rear wheel hub failure until a redesign of the rear wheel fixed the problem. This is pure speculation on my part but after examining both wheels in depth, I believe that both wheels are the same wheel being branded by multiple companies. Not that anything is wrong with this because it is very rare now of days that companies manufacture their own product. Just look carefully at both wheels and I personally would get the cheaper of the two wheels if you have your heart set on them because I believe they are the exact same wheel. Also just for the record I settled on a pair of Mavic Askium (sp?) wheels I got at a close out at performance and have loved them.
Went with the Eastons from Jenson. I figured out the same thing about Neuvation and Forte (and I'm guessing Blackspire) being the same wheels (or at least some of the same parts). I'm sure they'll be a great upgrade from what I had.
FYI, sold my Alex AT450s on Ebay for $60, so my net cost to upgrade and lose 1lb of weight is $100. The market appears to be good for used wheels right now.

Got the Easton Vistas today. Look nice and spin REAL nice, but I noticed that they're half radial laced on the rear. That seems ill-designed to me. I heard a few comments over on roadbikereview.com that say they're too flexy. I guess I'll find out! I kind of wish I'd gone with Neuvations right now. But hey, $60-70 saved (depending on shipping) right?

I actually found the Easton Vistas "less flexy" (lateral) than the Neuvations; in terms of heavy hammer and sprinting. I have never been impressed with the MAVIC line of wheels and that includes their customer service. I know they have the name per se, but their bearings don't spin well enough for me.
EASTON/Velomax has the best wheel customer service by far, no one matches their wheel service. They will rebuild, re true, give advice and they are on top of their product every step of the way - and best of all located in California (the wheel service that is). Not many sites have a dedicated section for wheel service and repair but EASTON does
As far as Neuvation, I liked their wheelset. I found them to be very responsive to e-mails and they have a very good reputation for standing next to what they sell. My Neuvations stayed true for 2 years of heavy crit racing. I think they are a very good value also. Neuvation has a very good web site with information on maintenance, bearings and what not
If you want to get into wheel flex - lateral - horizontal - vertical and otherwise, check out Sheldons Brown page on wheel flex
One more thing, 100-200 grams on wheel differences between brands - don't get to hung up on that. It's not always about the bike. I've had my butt kicked by people on cheap aluminum frames with used 105 parts and lousy tires.

Just a simple question. I'm putting in some light upgrades into my Trek 1000 to see if I can squeaze out some extra time from my bike legs this year. First and foremost is to drop a pound from my wheel weight and gain some aero-ness. I've settled on this order of preference:
Neuvation M28 ($199) 1700g
Easton Vista ($145) 1700g
UNBADGED Niobium 30mm ($150) 1550g
Reynolds Alta Comp ($150) 1800g
Mavic Aksium ($180) 1900g
Xero XR-1 ($230) 1800g
Ritchey DS Comp ($200) 1800g
Are any of these BAD choices?
