Sinus Drainage During Bike / Run
I have the same issue. I've just learned to deal with it and incorporate it into my regular breathing. I guess that's not necessarily a good thing. If you hadn't posted, I probably would have never had a second thought about it.
Does anyone know why this happens?
This is normal. It is caused by increased blood flow to your nostrils in order to warm up the air you are breathing in.

yay for snot rockets! I taught a 6 year old girl how to do them a couple weeks ago -- her mom is so happy ;)
I hope you're a teacher or something. Because if you're going around just approaching young children and teaching them vices like snot-rocketing, I can't see you being very popular in the neighborhood.
More of an art form than a vice :)

start swimming more so your nose is so dryed out from chlorine you welcome the snot :-p
"now I only have good days and great days."
I can't do proper snot rockets. The projectile gets 90% of the way out but remains attached at the base and then the whole thing flings into the wind and wraps around my face. I've resorted to a strong snort and spit technique.
Learn the art of the snot rocket. Simply place a finger to close one nostril and blow to clear out the other one. Switch sides and repeat. Sniffing in the mucus isn't great for you and never seems to end the problem (as I'm sure you noticed) but if you blow everything out you should be clear for about 5-10 minutes. On the bike just make sure to aim/time your shots well, so that no one behind you gets struck with friendly fire.
Only one solution: Snot rockets. [EDIT: Sully800, you beat me by 24 seconds!]
haha, in my rush to beat you I made a typo which I just noticed. When I edited it my post moved down to the current time, so now it looks like you beat me by six hours :-(

haha... daughter of a friend :)
yep - snot rocket's are the go (or 'bushies' as they're sometimes called down here - bush handkies). Make sure you balance your training though - learn to do both sides! :)

LOL! And now I have learned of another category of training --bitaleral snot-rocket launching. You guys crack me up!
Well, the rockets seem to work. I was a bit worried that I'd get some on me or my clothes, but I seemed to generate enough escape velocity that that didn't happen!
Another down side to the strong-snort-and-spit method is that depending on wind conditions and/or where you aim and/or spitting technique the spit can end up on your face. Snot rockets are the way to go. :P

Worried about getting it on your clothes? Man! I USE my clothes to wipe my nose!
Snot rockets, lungers, DNA Spray or Wipe and Swipe...whatever gets ya clean!

haha, guess you're right -- that's what they make washing machines for!
maybe its a little off topic, but there is no reason to start a new discussion for this...
how often do you wash your training clothes? i have a rotation of about 3 outfits that I use, and they are pretty much in a constant state of awful. I figure if I can smell 'em, i'm not going fast enough!
This time of year I get three workouts in before I get nasty...between my wife and I we always have a washer full... In summer I just hang the stuff out to dry and when it gets too crusty to put on I pitch it! ;)

I also do about 3 workouts in each during the winter. You don't sweat nearly as much and volume of winter clothing fills up the laundry rather quick.
In the summer if I re-wear an item its never more than once. Fortunately a pair of running shorts takes up very little space, and on a warm day that is all you need to wear.
I probably rotate them a little more in the summer because I tend to get pretty sweaty. Fortunately, I have a very poor sense of smell from years of working with photo chemicals and that makes going a bit longer in the clothes easier on me.
I sweat like it's nobodies business. I've done a spinning class and had to swim to the door at the end (which I wasn't too upset about the additional workout, however I felt sorry for everyone else in the room). Exaggeration aside, I still evaluate the nastiness of my clothes to determine if they are salvageable, but most of the time I get only 1 use. Luckily I rewear all my regular clothes 3-4 times if I can manage (and jeans upward of 1 month before wash), so it keeps laundry relatively manageable.
I typically only get one wear out of a pair of workout clothing. I sweat an incredible amount no matter what I am doing. After a workout I also tend to leave my workout clothes in a ball on the floor, so when I go to use them the next day, they are still dripping wet.
One workout per wearing here. Running shorts and shirts I tend to simply step into the shower with everything on (during the summertime) and hand wash/hang dry during the shower. Even doing that, I tend to put things through the laundry with soap at least once/week. Bike shorts, socks, and anything that's accumulated dirt/snot/etc always go straight into the washer.
"Care more than others think is wise, risk more than others think is safe, dream more than others think is practical, expect more than others think is possible."
I rotate and get about 2 workouts/outfit. I used to do 1 per, but then to keep that up I either needed to do laundry more often or buy more clothes.

unless i know i'll be joining others, in which case i need to break out something fresh
riverbrady's shower rinse is always a good option to extend the days between laundry time

I wind up washing after each use.
Ya, my schtuff is pretty nasty :o after a workout - so everything goes into the laundry.

Yay for snot rockets! It is truly and art I have mastered.
Sleeves work nicely too.
If it rains I don't have to wash my workout clothes.
I usually rinse them off and hang them out to dry or sometime I do like RiverBrady and wearthem into the shower.
Nothing to it, but to do it
Wearing your workout cloths in the shower is a real good idea!
I generally go by the size of the salt ring and how crunchy my sweat bands are!

During the cold weather training, I have been having a lot of sinus drainage while on the bike and also while running. It feels like I am constantly sniffling something back just to get a breath in thru the nose. This stuff is clear rather than green or yellow, so I don't think I have an infection. Dealing with this while riding or running is a pain and a distraction.
What do some of you do to avoid or deal with this drainage?
