every time while or after I crave sweets. Is there something wrong or do I just love candy?

You're probably just craving calories. It was explained to me that while you're swimming your body will resist burning fat (you need it to stay warm in a cold pool) and instead will burn through all of your carb stores. As a result, most people are very hungry for carbs after, and sometimes during, a swim. But I crave stuff like pizza and pasta, so maybe you do just love candy.

No offense, but I would have to see this in a scientific journal to believe an ounce of it. It sounds perfectly logical when you say it, but not scientifically likely. Perhaps being in the water, where you cool your body more efficiently, activates different metabolic pathways or something of the sort - so there could be a valid basis buried somewhere, but "needing it to stay warm" sounds like evolutionary hogwash.

Anyways, I crave salty foods and lots of water after swimming. I figure it's just a quirky individual thing.

No offense taken. I was probably doing a bad job of remembering the concept. But I am curious - are you saying that evolution is hogwash? I was unsure of the end of your quote.

Here's what I saw from one of Joe Friel's coaches:

"Don't rely on swimming to decrease bodyfat. Even hard swimming in relatively warm water reduces core body temperature (unless the water is 98.6 degrees!), making us hungry and stimulating fat storage. Core body temperature is a major factor in hunger and satiety. After swim workouts, athletes tend to consume more calories. This increase frequently exceeds the energy cost of the workout making swimming an excellent weight gain activity! Additionally, swimming has a much lower energy cost than cycling or running and athletes tend to overestimate refueling requirements. One method to minimize this negative side-effect of swimming is to have the athlete spend a few minutes in a sauna or hot-tub immediately following swim workouts. This increases core body temperature which tends to curb appetite and increases metabolic rate."

Anytime you decrease core body temp the body does everything it can to stimulate a return of homeostasis (normalcy). Stimulating a hunger response, especially for fats, is part of that. It's straight out of a basic Anatomy and Physiology class.

Categorically, no, that's not what I'm saying (Though personally, the leap from protozoa to humans is too much for me). What made me chuckle, though, is that I thought about athletes with good metabolic processes - ahem - "mating." After a few generations I suppose there could evolve a "species" of triathletes. Homo Athletae Multiplicabilis. Muuaaahahahah.

Ever wonder why water polo players wear those massive parkas? They key is getting warm as soon as possible after this swim. This will give you more realistic ideas of what you need to eat. I used to chow down after swimming... now I make sure to take a really hot shower and bundle up.

I actually think swimming has made me a lot leaner, and helped add flexibility....
