Regional Beer List
I will post up here.....
Not a restaurant but one of the best micro brews ever
Bells Oberon from Kalamazoo, MI
This is my favorite post race drink. My husband always has an ice cold six pack ready for me :)
I have two recommendations one local and one from my travels.
http://www.markjamesgroup.com/yaletown.html - Yaletown brew pub is still the best imo of the locals.
In Portland - http://henrystavern.com/index.cfm - 100+ taps of liquid gold, amber, bock, IPA - you get the picture.
If I'm having a beer, it just might be here: http://www.theoldeship.com/index.html
It's an awesome British Pub here in Orange County, California. They have an awesome collection of British Ales, Lagers, and Draughts... They also really know how to serve a good pint. Their CO2 system is a bit different than most people use, and they keep their beers at the proper temperature. (i.e. their Draughts aren't ICE COLD.)
There are a couple of "brewhouses" here, but none that I've been to are as good as breweries I've been to in other states.

Yeungling, America's Oldest Brewery, is less than an hour away. Their porter is an excellent beer. Most of the others are just ok. We have one brewpub and one small brewery in the Lehigh Valley which make decent beers. The Weyerbacher Hop Infusion being the best. Sam Adam's also owns the old Stroh's (yuuuckk) Brewery. Their Brown Ale and Cream Stout are outstanding for a mass produced beer.
I second yeungling. love the lager and just got a variety pack over the weekend - can't wait for a black and tan.
don't go to brew pubs much anymore but Dock St. in philly was pretty good.
I also like a local brewery called Victory in Downingtown. their Hop devil is deelicious
Krogh's Brew Pub
23 White Deer Plaza
Sparta, New Jersey 07871
(973) 729-8428
They even sponsor a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving day
A few recommendations for anyone in AZ.
Old Chicago - chain restaurant, but have a wide selection of beers both on tap and in bottles (if you drink them all you get some cool free stuff)
Rock Bottom Brewery - Also a chain restaurant but with a good selection of in house brewed beers
The Fox and the Hound - Awesome English tavern set up again nice wide selection of brews
Nimbus Brewery - Great local brew house
Finally the Frog 'n' Firkin - Great pub set up just off the U of A campus great atmosphere decent beer selection.

The Yeaungling B&T is good. You can make a better one by combining the Porter and the Chersterfield Ale. They changed the Lager recipe a few years back and it just doesn't do it for me any longer. Or maybe I just had a few to many back when I was on my 20's and have gotten sick of it.
I was to Dock St. once. outstanding. I parked by it whenever I did a downtown Philly race. It either moved or closed down a few years ago.
Victory Hop Devil is fantastic. I didn't know it was in Downingtown.
Maybe one of these days I will actually post something concerning Triathlons.
Fluid Replacement Beverage:
Okanagan Spring Pale Ale is brewed about half a klick from my office and available throughout the Okanagan and at pubs near Ironman Canada in Penticton.
Sir Winston's Pub, affectionately called Winnie's serves it.

Hey vanjames, I've had some of that Yaletown brew. Good stuff.

Got a few places I go
For a brewpub:
Harvest Moon in New Brunswick, NJ
For a good selection of beers:
Stuff Yer Face in New Brunswick, NJ
Shannon Rose in Clifton, NJ
Last time I was down in St. Petersburg, FL I had some brews from the Dunedin Brewery. The Redhead was great. Yeaungling is ok, but in a last resort kind of way; I prefer something heartier (Stone Arrogant Bastard anyone?).
Down here in Texas I'm going to have to go with Shiner Bock. When I am travelling other Semi mass-produced dependable are anything from Alaska Brewing co, or Full Sail.
Try the "Avalanche":
Breckenridge Brew Pub - several locations in Colorado.
600 South Main Street | Breckenridge, CO 80424

Can't say I expected to see Victory on this list, but it is pretty good! Are you from Dtown? I live in Exton (when not at school).
If you are here in Charlerston SC, I would recommend the Southend Brewery and Smokehouse for a porter and a pulled pork sandwich. And if you find yourself up in Freeport Maine I would highly recommend after a little shopping at L.L. Bean that you hit Gritty McDuff's for a Pale Ale and some lobster. Both places are outstanding!

In Tampa, the Ybor Brewery is prolly your best bet. New World Brewery (more like a bar, they lo longer brew) has a good selection. Dunedin is ok. We really dont have any real solid brew pubs :(
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Oberon is the perfect summer beer. I could not agree more that Bell's Oberon Ale is the best beer in the world. I had to bring it down to Atlanta with me every August when I left for college. Another great beer is an Atlanta brewery: Sweetwater. I love all their beers but their Blue is pretty unique.
Try the "Avalanche":
Breckenridge Brew Pub - several locations in Colorado.

Another great beer. I love this list.
My favorite beer is Long Trail from Vermont (near Killington)
http://www.longtrail.com/
They don't sell it south of NY/NJ so anytime I'm up that way, I buy cases of the stuff. My favorite is their Harvest, their fall seasonal, but all their beers are delicious!
here in beervana ("Portland...boasting more breweries per capita than Munich..." USAToday) i just pick what's fresh from the tapMy local favorite brewers
Widmer
There was a place in New Providence, NJ that sold Widmer a few years back. I really enjoyed the Widmer Raspberry. I haven't found anyone carrying Widmer recently. Sad Times... ha ha
Schlafly's St. Louis. A good micro with two great restaurants in the city.
FX Matt Brewery, Utica, NY (a.k.a. Saranac Brewery)
Great annual and seasonal variety. A nod to the Adirondack lifestyle, also New York's oldest brewery. Their Belgian White in the summer is my beer of choice. I always pick up 4 or 5 cases at the end of the season to keep me liquefied through the fall and - if I pace myself - the early winter. They also sponsor the Utica Boilermaker which is a relatively large 15k road race. Get past the finish line and it's all the free beer you can drink.
I do like a good Schlafly beer. Try to get there whenever I visit my sister. Especially bottleworks in the summer.
On my end, in Louisville, KY:
Bluegrass Brewing Company is pretty solid. They have an APA that's not for the faint of heart along with some other quality brews. Check their seasonal offerings, that's where some of my favorites have come from (and eventually gone away :(, lol ).
I now live in Cincinnati and haven't been here long enough to find anything great. Of course if you like atmosphere and huge german beers, you can't go wrong with Hofbrauhaus
My blog: http://jsktri.blogspot.com
Mmmmmmm Beer!
The Flying Saucer (various cities in the South) locations always have a huge selection including a massive tap wall.
Brewing cos. & the beer I love:
Abita - LA (Turbodog and Abita Amber)
Sweetwater - GA (IPA and 420)
Bells - MI - Two Hearted Ale may be the best beer ever
Dillon Dam Brewery - CO - absolutely beautiful EPA
Great Divide - CO - Titan IPA
Terrapin - GA - Rye Pale Ale for something different and good
This is a popular thread, good to see i'm not the only one who likes to binge on good beer. funny cause i've been bouncing around an idea of doing a small site for endurance athletes that love beer for about a year, maybe it's worth exploring...
anyway, we have some good brewers here in town, I like the Deschutes beers (http://www.deschutesbrewery.com) and I have a friend who hooked me on Moose Drool from Big Sky Montana (http://www.bigskybrew.com/).

I thought Trifuel was already an endurance website for those who like beer? ;-)
Ha. apparently it is. :)
I'm sad that I can't get one of every suggestion into my beer cooler for Sunday's Game!
Well that's why they are Regional Beers, I suppose.
I'm traveling to Florida in a few weeks, Tampa Area. I'm going to do a sprint while I'm down there.
My first trip down was a couple years ago, I was really surprised to find Yuengling as an option. The brewery was just down the street from Busch Gardens. I ate a place right across from the Yuengling plant, it was called "Shells" I think. Good Seafood place, not crazy fancy or anything. I think there are many of them in that area. I asked if they had Yuengling install a line directly to their tap to save on delivery costs. I guess they get asked that often. He replied "Yep they just take a meter reading each month, it's just like a water meter"
I can get Yuengling anytime tho'. I'm going to make a point of finding Triguy98's suggestions.
Ettaler Kloster Dunkel, Ettal Germany.
You can special order it from Whole Foods. I fell in love with this beer while living in Germany.

Coming back? You LIKE this city? Granted training is year round, but we have NO culture.
What race are ya doing? I dont start actual tri racing till March or April. The Beverage Castle is a good little stop to make if you want beer, but dont wanna go out. Over 300 beers in stock.
http://www.beveragecastle.com/ I spend too much money there.

tri guy, i have made a few trips to tampa this year to macdill afb. i second your opinion. not much there and quite frankly much of the city is run-down...

MacDill isn't exactly the best part of town ;) Lots of government and low end housing for sure. There ARE parts of Tampa that are nice. SoHo, some areas of South Tampa, Bayshore, New Tampa, Odessa, etc. But as a whole, the city is just sort of...blah. MacDill is just in the armpit of Tampa.

I was digging in the fridge to see what was going to be available for game time. I had a couple bottles of Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale mixed in with the SamAdams Octoberfest I'd been saving.
http://www.smuttynose.com/pages/comments.html#anchor2064798
I'm typically not a fan of the pumpkin ales but this one worked for me. It definitely reminded me of Pumpkin Pie, that's a good thing in my book.
I got this Smuttynose here in NJ so it must be distributed throughout New England. It's based in Portsmouth NH. I haven't had any of their other brews.
Sam Adam's seasonals are exceptional as far as mass produced beers go. Some of them are FANTASTIC. I really do like the Oktoberfest, but it sells out pretty much as soon as it hits the shelves around here. For the game, I have some Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA (I prfer teh 90 minute as far as taste and kick are concerned) and some Woodchuck Granny SMith Apple Cider for my girl.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Lots of great suggestions on this post! The Boulder area has a bunch of great spots as well. In Lyons, CO we have Oskar Blues, which makes many great beers including Old Chub and Dale's Pale Ale. Perhaps the best brewery in Colorado, and Lyons used to be home to the DeBooms. The pub at the Boulder Beer Company is also great - and their Hazed and Confused Beer is nice and hoppy. My personal favorite, though, is the Pearl Street Pub downtown. It's a total dive bar with great beer on tap (like Red Hook) and the kind of pub food that satisfies all cravings. Don't miss the chicken tenders.
Maybe we need to incorporate "pub crawl" into the triathlon culture. The fourth event. Or maybe some of you already have ...
Richmond, VA has a couple of places to get a good glass of beer. Whenever I'm up there on business and have the time, I go to the Capitol Ale House on Main Street on Monday night. Their regular burgers are a buck ($1!!!) and the specialty burgers are $2-3 bucks. They have a beer menu that is several pages long. If you can't make up your mind what to drink, the staff is pretty cool about bringing you samples of several different beers.
Of course, after a meal and a couple of beers, I have to get a good workout in the next day or I feel doubly guilty for the indulgence! lol Fortunately, there are some good running trails downtown. You can get good views of the city from several of them along the James River.

I just picked up some 60 minute IPA...not complaining, seems a little mild for an IPA, but still enjoyable. I don't think I'd have noticed it had I not been reading this forum before heading to the store. Thanks for the suggestion

Rock Bottom Brewery - Also a chain restaurant but with a good selection of in house brewed beers
Just so you know that both Old Chicago and Rock Bottom are owned by the same company. Old Chicago was started in Boulder, CO.
And to follow up on the other Boulder response...try Avery or Twisted Pine and when in Fort Collins there is always New Belgium and Fat tire!
You know I think I remember something about that, still fun places =)

Check out my blog!
Just had my first Sam Adams Double Bock ever. Wow! That is about as opposite from a light beer as you can get! 8.8% Alcohol 310 Calories.
I can see how many people would dislike this beer. If you don't like their Octoberfest this is definitely not for you.
I love Octoberfest so I enjoyed the Double Bock. This one has so much flavor, that drinking more than one is really too much for me. Not to mention the Alcohol content.
Where was this stuff when I was in college?!? Ha ha!
PS: This was my reward for spending presidents day morning training instead of sleeping in. Mile Swim, Break, 20mi bike, 10K run. (brick)
Anyone up for Sierra Nevada after the Disney Half-Ironman?
They have great concerts at their brewery in California and they sponsor a cycling team. Doesn't get any cooler than that.

Closest I can get to warm weather is my trip to Tampa next week. I just looked at the weather and it's cold there. :(
It had better warm up by next week!
Hoping to find time to check this place out while I'm there.

Maybe for some carb loading before my Sprint on Sunday 9th. I seem to remember someone calling them CRTs.
Mine. I brew my own.Cheers
That seems to be the best idea I have heard!
Mine. I brew my own.Cheers
Its been far too long since I've brewed a batch. Been tough since my brewing buddy moved down near D.C. We make some kick-@$$ cyser.
I'm probably doing too much cheating this month:
Atlantic City Beerfest
Craft Beer Festival
Had a few brews after the Mooseman.
Smuttynose IPA: I decided that it tasted better when it was not very cold.
Long Trail BlackBeary Wheat: Fantastic!
There was a 3rd that was Raspberry from a different brewer. I'll have to come back and add it.
It had a strong Raspberry taste to start but I didn't care for the aftertaste. No wonder I don't remember what it was!
Tommyknockers - Idaho Springs, Colorado
Upstream - Omaha, NE
O'dell's - Fort Collins, Colorado
and Wasatch - Park City, Utah

After looking at that "Alcohol and the Triathlete" post, it would seem that there are many of us that love a good brew as reward. So I thought it might be cool for people to post the good places to get a beer while they are out traveling.
Triumph Brewing Company
128 Nassau St
Princeton NJ

If their Rauch Bock is available it's a must try. It's a "Smoke Beer" and it really reminds you of bacon. Sounds disgusting right? Trust me. Order up some barbecue and the Rauch Bock and enjoy. This beer proves bacon really does make everything taste better.
