Which wheels for IM AZ?
I don't see why Zipp and one of your existing wheels wouldn't work. I don't ride a disc so i can't tell you about comfort but I've never heard anyone complain about them in that regard.

IM AZ in April? It can be REALLY windy. Something to keep in mind if you aren't comfortable on your disc in wind.

Thanks. I heard that it tends to be windy, but I still don't know what to do/bring. I think I may just put on my Carbones even though they are heavy. The course is supposed to be one of the flattest in North America, anyway. The only problem is that I usually prefer to race on tubulars, and my mavic's are clinchers.
You should be fine with the rear disc. The winds are generally headwinds, not severe crosswinds. Your AC 58 or the Carbone would be fine up front.
But weight WILL be an issue. The winds WILL slow you down, and so spinup speed will be a factor. I'd recommend going as light as possible on the front wheel (I think your AC58 will be lighter than the Carbone, right?) Good luck!
Thanks for the information. The AC58's are much lighter than the Mavic's. I'll probably go a head and use that one.
Good decision. And best of luck.
One last piece of advice -- DON'T OVERINFLATE your tires. When you pump them up at 6am on race day, it will be very cold outside. By mid-day, it'll be in the 90's. Once those tires heat up and expand, they blow. I saw a TON of flats last year, some on account of glass, but probably just as many due to overinflation.
I wouldn't go over 110psi, so that you have some overhead. The volunteers from Landis Cyclery put my tires closer to 125psi on race morning, so I just let some air out after they had pumped me up. Granted, I was on clinchers that day -- you have a higher max psi on your tubs, but I wouldn't push it.
Thx. I didn't know about the large fluctuation in temp during the day. Looks like I'll probably pump them up to 105-110 during the morning. Any other tips on the course?
+1 on not over-inflating. I DNF'ed my first tri because I got 2 flats on the bike, and basically ended up jogging the bike course with my bike. I guess I shouldn't say that's why I DNF'ed, because I chose not to finish, but it didn't help. I should have had a spare tube, but either way, it's no fun to fix a flat.

Just one. ENJOY yourself; it's a wonderful experience. :-D

My wife just bought me a tubular Zipp disk wheel for IM AZ. I was originally going to use a set of American Classics 58 tubulars or Mavic Cosmic Carbones. Should I go ahead and use the disk wheel with one of the front wheels I have, or should I try and get another front wheel like a Hed Trispoke or something else? Are disk wheels comfortable for entire bike leg? This will be my first Ironman distance race.
Thanks for your info.
