The Screw Shoe
Old time trick.
Generally it's something you consider doing to your shoes when you've got a season of running on ice/snow, rather than just a few days (though I've known friends who've taken them back out as well). Personally, when I made up pairs of screw shoes back home they would stay that way and generally last for a season or two of cold weather running, depending on the snowfall that year.

No, I haven't tried that. It snows/ices maybe one day a year here in north Texas. But I will put screws in a retired pair of shoes immediately when I get home. You know, just in case. Brilliant!
I know someone who puts screws in their bike tires during the winter (it snows a lot here in Utah). They screw them from the inside though, so the pointy parts are out. You have to make sure the screws are pretty smooth otherwise you'll flat about every 10 feet.

I've been doing this for the past 3 winter seasons. It works extremely well as long as you don't get screws that are too long (ouch!). You can also purchase Yak Trax. They serve the same purpose, I'm just too cheap to buy them. I haven't had any problems with taking the screws out and leaking water or anything either. If you have to run on the ice it's great. They don't really work in the snow very well though as they don't really grab onto anything.
Somebody has mentioned this before but I couldn't find the thread.
It looks pretty cool.

I'm curious if anybody's tried anything like this. It seems like a good idea, but there are some possible drawbacks...ie holes in your shoes.
